  • (scurries off to find books on how the Germans nailed their Marshall plan money and the UK spaffed it away and started a spiral to where we are now...)

  • No need to wait to see that...

  • It was rather more than that.

  • Thank you.
I won't hold my breath waiting to see that on the front pages of the Mail/Express/Telegraph/Times. Probably won't even feature in a Guardian editorial.

  • Having worked for a minor German chemical company in the '80s, I would say it was down to management. The German Mittelstand had parallel career development for those with technical qualifications, resulting in boards that had Engineers and (ex-) Process Chemists represented.

  • Funnily enough last election I was speaking to a sales colleague who always voted Tory based on "the economy". After I probed, he actually came to the conclusion that he'd made vastly more money, and been better off under Blair/Brown than any Conservative government.

FWIW I got him to complete one of those "who should I vote for" surveys and he came up UKIP.

  • Anybody who thinks Corbyn is a Marxist doesn't really understand what Marxism is.

    THIS

  • Should have quit whilst you were ahead hahaha

  • That anecdote makes me despair in fifteen different ways :(

  • Germany's post war recovery must be one of the greatest economic success stories in modern history.

From memory, the only European nation not to receive Marshall Plan money was Spain (the USA hated Spain). Looking at and comparing the spending decisions and policies of each European country post war is heaven for an economics nerd. The UK did not do well.

  • From @hugo7 's link

We all know the easy British explanation for our cumulative export
defeat in world markets from the 1950s onwards, especially at the
hands of the Germans. This story tells us that lucky West Germany had
all her industries and infrastructure bombed flat or removed as
reparations, and then was able to re-equip herself from scratch with
Marshall Aid dollars. Meanwhile, so this hard-luck story goes on, poor
old Britain had to struggle on with worn-out and old-fashioned kit.

Britain actually received more than a third more Marshall Aid than
    West Germany ...

This is utter myth. Britain actually received more than a third more
Marshall Aid than West Germany - $2.7 billion as against $1.7 billion.
She in fact pocketed the largest share of any European nation. The
truth is that the post-war Labour Government, advised by its resident
economic pundits, freely chose not to make industrial modernisation
the central theme in her use of Marshall Aid

  • Can I make it 16 by adding that he is a second generation immigrant?

  • I read that link yesterday. I appreciated the part where it suggested that Marxism is the philosophical root of Corbyn's brand of democratic socialism but not the defining category.

  • The

truth is that the post-war Labour Government, advised by its resident

    calling governments 'she' thread >>>>>>>>>

  • Right, but we're all agreed that other than the New Labour government, all others, have been fuckwhits who's mismanagement has damaged the economy?

  • "Labour isn't working"
"can the last labour voter turn off the lights?"

    These things resonate more than

    for some reason.

  • Depends on your experience.

An old neighbor when I was little had been a Labour supporter as a young man. His mother died slowly in hospital over the Winter of Discontent. The family had to clean, change, wash, etc. her.

Of course there are plenty of logical counter arguments. But that stayed with him, in the same way that your image forms part of your political identity.

  • ://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-qa-which-party-has-a-better-track-record-on-the-economy

What's this balanced bullshit? I want a binary answer to beat my opponents with.

The takeaway from that could almost be that the governing party makes little difference.

  • For a party of Law and Order and Stability and Economic Success, there appears to be (and I would love to be proved wrong here) a lot more "things" the Conservative Party have mishandled in my life.

Perhaps we need a list and a scoring system?
And a time frame. Let's go with post second world war

    How about:
    The UK since 1945
Things that have happened under a Labour government
    Mismanaging the marshall plan money
    Union power
    The NHS

Things that have happened under a Conservative government
    Hillsboro
    The Miners Strikes
    Unemployment
    The EU

and not to leave the lib dems out

Things that have happened under a coalition government
    Tuition fees

  • But where is margaretthatcherspenis?

  • who was in power when cat bin lady happened?
