That's what I do on all my bikes, but then all my bikes have aerobars. This is on a tourer without aerobars (I think).
I've also used one of those Space Saver mounts to get extra "bar space"...
I can't find the one I use but this kind of thing..

I put a home made bridge between my extensions and put a basic Wahoo out front mount on that. Worked perfectly for TAW and as people have said, the further forward the better. I could have used a standard rubber band mount but this gave me more room for food etc.
You could probably combine it with a light mounted underneath.
