So this has recently come to light in a Facebook group. Was apparently a favourite of John Peel's. Mysterious, dark and well, just awesome.

  • So gutted this sold out before I managed to get a ticket

  • Still 6 tickets available for this, if you're up for something more intimate.

  • Any idea what any of these sets will be like? Randall one is obvious, but what is Rodigan going to play?! And who even is Skream? I’m guessing (hoping) that ‘hardcore’ will be 92/93 Reinforced-style stuff?

  • Om unit are good be interesting to listen to what they will play asn skream is dubstep producer but good DJ as well a UK hardcore set could be fun. The obvious ones will be good fun. some where in my head I think artifical intelligence will be good too but can't place them atm. DJ zink will be good too

  • Cool, cheers. Yeah, good point on Zinc - could be really good, he’a been putting out a load of mixes going back from ‘89, with each one dedicated to a single year. I guess I’m just hoping to hear a lot of Platinum Breakz era and before stuff, not very much from the last 20 years! Hoping the newer stuff is in the second room and the main room will get to hear plenty of favourites.

  • Storm b2b with Flight should be good. Kinda gutted not to be going but at the same time I really don't like that Venue

  • I really don't like that Venue

How come? I can't find much info on food and drink on their website, just a list of drinks brands. What's the set up like in that regard?

  • Food stalls/traders outside in the smoking area. Drinks selection wasn't great at the bar and for some reason I swear it was card only.
For me the main room is just too big and long, like a tunnel and although there are speaker hangs all the way back it's almost although you're not really amongst it.
Second room is stupidly dark in comparison to the main space and understandably cramped.

Oh and the toilets are a fair way away from the main space

  • Good to know. The toilet problems I've heard from others. Eugh.

    On the theme...

  • Well the Metalheadz @ Printworks event was absolutely brilliant and the single best Drum and Bass event I've ever been to.

For context I'm 37, so even in Metalheadz' absolute heyday of around '96, I was still only 14. It was from around 1998 when I was 16 that I started to get into DnB in a big way, and to this day I still treasure a mix that a mate's older brother gave me, and that included loads of Metalheadz classics like Pulp Fiction, Unofficial Ghost and - probably the tune above all else that made me want to get into
DJing - The Nocturnal by Peshay.

I got my decks in late 2000 and, while I was picking up a lot of Ram, Bad Company, Hardware, Prototype etc that was coming out new, I tended to be focused on getting 94-97 jungle represses and second hand stuff from eBay. I'll never forget picking up stuff like the AWOL Live LP, High Recommended LP and of course Platinum Breakz.

During the same time-frame, I was going out to events in Brixton and Inigo in Clapham, as well as Fabric fairly often. I never went to the big raves like Slammin' Vinyl, One Nation, Telepathy, Jungle Fever etc as all I'd heard is that they were usually full of trouble and were always in the far flung reaches of town and I didn't have many people to go with. I did go to this Raindance event at Brixton Academy in 2001, though.

By around 2007/2008 I was doing internet radio. I know the guys that run RollDaBeats, and I went to their events like this one. The sets would always contain guaranteed classics and rare stuff you would never hear at more commercial events, but the venues were always small scale. Around the same time I went to an AWOL event at Ministry, for example, and as good as it was, it was mostly just anthems being played.

So, basically, I'd never really been to a big event to hear some of the classic tunes that were formative to the scene and my own taste and participation in the music. I've always felt a little bit of disappointment that it had passed me; that I was born too late for it.

Before Saturday I'd been digging through some of the Metalheadz back catalogue and stuff that was a similar sound from 94-97 that I'd particularly like to hear, although I had a nagging feeling of doubt that I might not hear any of it.

I went with my wife and we got there just before 2 for Randall. It was billed as a 'history set' and I was immediately a bit disappointed as there was lots of stuff that didn't sound familiar. That's my own bias though, as for me I was hoping for exclusively the early years, whereas the event was a look back at 25 years. The standout tracks were Andy C - Roll on and Dillinja - Silver Blade, which were reward enough for getting there early.

Next was David Rodigan and... well, I didn't really get it. It was all very theatrical and everyone was absolutely loving it, but it was basically like Chase and Status-sounding stuff, which isn't for me.

We went and checked out the smaller 'Dark Room' at this point. Someone called Diverge was playing. I digged it, but I'd never heard any of the stuff being played and I assume it was all pretty recent. I didn't look back at that room until much later and there was a huge queue and a one-way, one in one out system being operated, which was a shame as I at least wanted to check a few of the other sets, if just for a few minutes.

Next on the main stage was Zinc and he absolutely smashed it. Tonnes of classic jungle tunes. Only thing was how frenetic the mixing was. To be fair, each set was an hour, so I understand trying to get as many tunes in as possible, but it was just double dropping constantly and I was feeling a bit bewildered as I just wanted to listen to some of the tunes more. Highlight was Lords of the Null Lines or Atlantis.

After this we had a break and got some food. Made it back for the end of My Nu Leng, which was pretty similar to Zinc, but more on the drum and bass side. Pretty sure it was about then that I heard stuff like Acid Trak and No Reality - I lost it to that one.

Next was Skream's hardcore set. This was quite interesting. Some very obscure 92/93 stuff I recognised, along side some - what I assume - was newer, old-sounding stuff. Highlight was Photek - Complex

Can't remember much of Dub Phizix. Most of the time then we went to get drinks with our mates and go to the toilet etc. As mentioned up thread, the venue has its foibles for sure. You will miss multiple tunes having to go to the toilet. The bar set up was good though, didn't ever have to wait that long and, if it looked like you would, you could just go to a different bar and there'd be no queue. As for the sound, it started off kind of weak, and the bass cut out for a bit of Zinc's set that he didn't realise, which was annoying, but if you get a spot right next to a speaker stack, on the inside of the room, you can get a pretty good view of the light show and the sound is good enough - it's certainly not loud though - not like how I remember being stood at the speakers in Fabric, for example.

The absolute highlight of the night was Storm & Flight. When 'Your Sound' got dropped I thought I was going to cry with nostalgia. That is one tune I would not have expected to hear. Then stuff like Unofficial Ghost and Armoured D got dropped too! I am praying that this set above all the others gets uploaded at some point. If tape packs still existed, I would do whatever it took to get one. I'm obsessively checking social media for any links - even just tracklists would be brilliant to see.

Fabio & Grooverider and Goldie and Doc Scott just carried on the vibes really, but it definitely peaked for me with Storm & Flight.

The timing from 2-11pm was just ideal. We would be getting up at 7am the next day for our toddler. Even though we ended up spending about £150 on drinks between us, I felt more or less fine yesterday and was able to go on a training ride before work this morning, albeit not of the best quality.

Anyway, as anyone who's read this can probably tell, I am absolutely buzzing still about how much fun it was and having realised an opportunity to hear some of the music I never thought I would in such an amazing venue. I'm now wondering - and hoping - if there'll be anything else quite like it again.

  • Great write up. Lord of the null lines is such a great track. Glad you had a great time hope there will be tape pack soon 🤣👍👍👍

  • Cheers. Kind of wish I went on to part two at the Steel Yard now...

After having heard No Reality for the first time in ages, I've been digging out stuff from the same era...

  • Thanks for sharing this, enjoyed it.

  • Glad to hear it :)

I still haven't stopped thinking about it. It's spurred me on to record a few more mixes.

No Reality was one of those tunes that I never actually got around to acquiring, and I've just gone and picked up that and a whole load of other Ram Trilogy and Bad Company stuff that's always been missing from my collection.

My intention is to record two or three mixes that span the 1998-2002 era as a homage to all the stuff that was coming out right at the start of my foray into DJ'ing and clubbing. I'm going to be able to include a load of stuff that's going to seem fresh to me, mixed in with all the stuff I've already got.

Will start pulling tunes tonight, but this might take me a while to find the time to record them, but hopefully the first one will be ready next month... I'm open to any requests!

  • Added to my wants list.

Something that just occurred to me is that, in 2000 when I was buying up stuff from around '94, it was stuff that was already 6 years old - and that felt like an eternity then.

Now, the stuff I'm buying from around 2000 is nearly 20 years old, but it still sounds 'new' to me.

Anyway, that just makes me wonder where all that fucking time went.
