  • Please fit a mudguard in there using the stiffener tube as stays.

  • Always wanted to try this; looks ideal to me. How's the low(er) center of gravity compared to traditional rear racks?

And any side pictures of the bike with pannier(s)? Great work.

  • Yikes

Nyloc though, they're not going anywhere.

  • Successfully hacked a laptop stand for the turbo after finding the perfect product on Amazon.

Very pleased that I didn't have to hack into my bannister. Also reassured that the CoG should prevent it falling down the stairs opposite.

not mine, but deserves a place here

  • There’s a much simpler way of achieving the same result: use a sram 9 speed shifter with a shimano 10 speed clutch mech!

  • yes,but this is the only way to have 9/10 speed clutch on road shifters

  • Ah! Gotcha. Probably should have looked at the video with sound on :-)

  • Feels great, though I’m only using front bags, would not be suitable with larger.

Only issue is that they are positioned quite far back to avoid heel strike and could probably do with more support to avoid flop ..

  • Anyone watch the Post Apocalyptic Inventor on YT? His repair visa are a lot more informative and insightful than some of the other 'tool restoration' channels.

  • Certainly recognise the intro, think I've seen one or two episodes.
Very jealous of the skill (and tools!) involved.

  • Brilliant! thanks for sharing that.

  • I have these ^ NOS. . Just need to check I have the bolts for them. Can send them for the price of a 4pack of beers + postage.

  • Ah, Planet X delivered yesterday. Not quite right so ordered cheapo eBay ones last night.

  • Have no idea what he's doing with almost any of that but these kind of videos are mesmerising.

  • I've spent the last couple of days watching almost all of his videos. Thanks for that.

I'm also bidding on a broken lawn mower as I've convinced myself I can fix it (I almost certainly can't).

  • Post Apocalyptic Inventor on YT

That's my evenings sorted for a few days. Thanks!

  • This is brilliant! proper dad videos

  • 1" threaded to 1 1/8 threadless conversion

This happened because I noticed that without the headset cups installed, an old 1" road bike has (barely) enough clearance to fit a modern fork. The problem is that there does not exist a suitable headset conversion so I had to make one. These are outboard mounting cups, pressfit on like normal. They were milled from 6061T6 and built pretty stout, total weight <100g. I calculated the difference in diameters between the 1 1/8 steerer tube and the head tube to be 1/10mm, giving 1/20mm clearance around the steerer. I had to file down some internal imperfections but despite the tolerances, the headset feels very smooth and rides great. The design of the cup and the bearing used raised the headtube by approx 5mm.

Though I kind of just remembered a critical detail that might make using this headset with another fork difficult - most forks taper out slightly at the bottom to fit the crown race, typically up to an inch. This particular one was straight to the bottom where there was a step for the race, I may not be able to insert most forks unless they have a very straight steerer design.

I asked about doing this a while ago, @mdcc_tester told me off because of the increased levering action πŸ˜‰ (not that he's wrong necessarily)

PS. not mine by the way

  • Got a frame with a downtube that has an external diameter of about 32 mm. Plan was to install clamp-on downtube shifters, but needless to say this sizing screwed me over big time, as the standard is 28.6 mm.
The reason I wanted to go with DT is that they are literally dirt cheap. STIs and bar ends would cost at least 5 times more, and this is a next-to-no-cost project. There are no adapters I could find, or if there are, they cost about as much as a pair of STIs.
How would you guys bodge this together? For the time being I'm going single speed but that won't cut it in the long run.

  • Can you fit to the stem?
