  • I've just received a lovely spool of white filament that glows bright blue in the dark...

  • If people are really that keen, I'm happy to make a few as and when I have some spare time.

However, I won't charge for them as its not my design. You'd have to give me a bit of time to get it all sorted.

EDIT: Also, I really don't think you guys want one of these. Its really not all that.

  • So my Morakniv has started losing it's edge which has prompted me to finally learn how to sharpen a knife. As a complete beginner where do I start?

  • I got one looks similar the smallest of those 3, writing is different though. Was a fiver, "Tsubazo".

Feels nice not the sharpest out of the box. Already got beetroot stain on the handle...

    Apols for shit pic.

  • Youtube is good - lots of video guides for a starter

  • The blade on the TK Maxx specials are not as thick and has a bit of flex compared to the Japanese knives I bought over in japan, which are extremely well made. Then again you pay for that.

  • I started using a stone a couple of months ago; it's not too difficult to get the hang of.

You can get a cheap double sided stone which will be fine, something like 1000/3000 grit will be ok. Get an angle guide as well as it's handy when you are trying to build up your confidence.

Then watch a few youtube vids and off you go.

I've just given my two main kitchen knives a quick sharpen this eve and they are both cutting beautifully. Very satisfying.

  • Something else to try is a steel. If the blade had just gone a bit dull a few strokes with a steel usually is all you need. It takes a bit of practice but is fast and doesn’t wear the blade away.

  • Cheers guys

  • I've got a few double sided stones you're welcome to help yourself too to get started. I think they're 600/1000 and 2000/6000 or something thereabouts

  • Where can you get some decent second hand sabatiers?

  • I got this little beauty for my birthday. It’s a very special little knife in many ways.

  • Is that a shubunkin?

  • Been customising my no.7 Onion Patina.

Mostly cosmetic, not showroom but looks ok.

Finished with Lemon Oil then Brooks Saddle Wax.

  • Has anyone used mdf discs on a bench grinder for sharpening?

  • For polishing / buffing yes, not really sharpening. Gave my Leatherman Micra a nice polished blade and a much better edge than factory.

  • New kitchen, new chopper

  • Ooo good choice. Love the shape of the belly. Rolls so nice

  • yep, its almost like cheating.

This place is very cheap for your compounds/mops for shining stuff up, then you can use the compounds on your MDF wheel for sharpening. Remember to turn your grinder the opposite way, so it spins away from you, as if you catch the edge, you have a multi-miles per hour pointy projectile aiming in the general area of your bollocks/minge.

  • Bollocks, wish I had seen that earlier. I have ordered and now got silicon carbide, beeswax, white jewellers rouge all from different places. Have cut two mdf discs and will balance them on the bench grinder when it arrives.

Have even bought a protractor so I can mark different blade angles. The set up will be used for axes, knives, lawn mover blades.

Saw one video where the person turned the motor assemble around on their grinder so it spins away from them but the switch is still on the front.

  • ah, bugger....worth keeping in mind though, as they are old school style sellers.

Its not a drama to just spin the grinder around, and I still use it for polishing, which is better towards you, as you can see what you're doing better.....dont worry about making your MDF too perfectly, as when they are fixed on, just hold some sandpaper up to it👌

I usually do my axes by hand, using files to remove big dings, then progressively finer wet and dry, wrapped around various shaped bits of wood......very satisfying!

  • We have splitting axes, mauls, kindling axes and hatchets. It’s rewarding but time consuming sharpening them. It was one of the wranglestar YouTube videos on axe sharpening that got me on to this journey. 4 passes on coarse and 4 passes on polishing (each side) and he was able to shave his arms. It takes me a lot longer with a puck stone and ain’t got time for that.

  • wranglestar

Isn't he widely regarded as a bit of a hack?

  • Strops.

    I'd like one.

    Sugegstions?

(Not the petted lip pouty variety. I'm good for those, thanks.)

  • I use a leather belt, and wrap it around a towel dryer in the bathroom. The rough side is treated with Dovo stropping paste and the smooth side just as it comes. I use it to strop my shaving razor. Works amazingly well.
