  • I put down a pre order deposit on one of these Velo-Orange Neutrino Minivelos, and as the delivery is drawing nearer I'm trying to piece together some parts so I can get it built up ASAP when it arrives. It's supposedly arriving on these shores in November sometime so I have a little time to scour eBay for second hand bargains.

Right now I'm planning to build it into a single speed, flat bar type build, with the option of adding a rear derailleur in the future. I haven't really worked out what the cockpit will look like, but right now I'm leaning more towards some wide mtb risers because that's what I've got. My current build list looks like the attached, with the yellow components what I think would be prudent to search out on the bay. Main things that are baffling me are:

    • Rims for the wheel build, they're basically BMX rims but finding some of the correct width is a pain. VO spec Velocity Cliffhanger Rims. I might outsource this to whoever builds the wheels.
    • What cranks? VO suggest MTB cranks with a 39 chainring, I think I could go up to 40 so I guess I should have the pick of a bunch of 90s square taper MTB stuff, but its pretty unfathomable. Does it matter if I use a triple crankset with just one chainring?
    • What stem/bar/reach/stack/whatever I hate this stuff and feel like I should just do it by feel when I've got the bike build up (when I've got my LBS to build the bike up)

Linx of VO stuff I have been referring to

    FAQ

Why not just buy a Brompton?
I don't wear brogues to the office, live within the m25, or carry a leather messenger bag. The bike mostly needs to fit into a car, not a tube carriage.

Why not just buy a BMX?
I am thirty four years old, cannot 'bunny hop' and don't feel obliged to learn.

Why not just buy an Orbea Katu, which can be obtained as a complete build, with dynamo lighting and hydraulic brakes, for a similar cost to what you're paying for a frame?

Why not just buy an Airnimal Joey, it's the same size wheels AND it folds?
    I can't hear you.

You know what they say about men with small wheeled bicycles...
No what do they say about men with small wheeled bicycles?

They have to fit an adjusted gearing to provide a similar pedalling cadence for a given speed
    Very Funny.

  • oh yes!

listen to your heart m8, dont let @fizzy.bleach bully you

    allahu akbar!

  • also VO klunker

  • Will it have a dropper?

  • Feels like..droppers are mostly for 'getting rad' on 'gnar descents' in 'American national parks' unless I'm mistaken?

As with all my bikes, I'm just going to ride it to the coffee shop.

  • I mostly use mine for putting a foot down at traffic lights without having to tip toe or stand up...

  • I am not even kidding but I kinda think its essential for a commute with lots of traffic lights

    aliexpress has many droppers

  • Nice, following for the build/pics/FAQs. Triple crank with a single chainring would be fine.

  • I can't get with this ludicrous consumerist excess. Can you trackstand small wheeled bikes. Seems doable.

  • Can you trackstand

I can't trackstand, bunny hop, skid, wheelie, endo, ride fast a bike

  • Would like to go for a Honda Ruckus type vibe.

  • Fit Gatorskin Hardshells and ride over a manhole cover in the rain. You'll learn skidding easy.

  • I am not even kidding but I kinda think its essential for a commute with lots of traffic lights

I thought you didn't want me to start bullying people in this thread?

  • Can no one on this website trackstand anymore?

  • You could tell the OP they don't need disc brakes

  • I have been eying these for a while for e neo-retro 90's mtb dropbar build. But received a hard NO from the girlfriend who is enforcing the one out/one in rule.

  • A dropper would not only be great in the hectic situation of having to put your foot down in the chaos that can be an urban jungle, lowering the saddle would also make it easier to fit the overpriced bmx in your car.

  • ok mate thanks will put it on the list

  • Rims for the wheel build, they're basically BMX rims but finding some of the correct width is a pain. VO spec Velocity Cliffhanger Rims. I might outsource this to whoever builds the wheels.

The tyres on the bikes you have pictured look pretty 'bmx'ey, I'd imagine therefor there'd be no problem running a bmx rim? Most of them will be sans brake surface as most bmxes are ridden brakeless these days so should work well for your disc brake build.

  • Good shout! I think that I will get https://www.halowheels.com/shop/components/rims/t2-20-rim/
    They seem nice, also affordable.

  • Are these 110BCD? I ordered some white industries cranks thinking they fit the bill, but they're 94 bcd, which is a pain to find chainrings for. Ideally I would have a crankset compatible with a 44t narrow wide chainring.

  • Those tyres are BMX tyres... Eclat Fiereballs. so yeah, BMX rims will be just fine.

  • you should pull your finger out and buy this bike @chrisbmx116

  • no mudguard or rack mounts?! have some self-respect.
