Looks like I hadn’t really missed anything and probably just need to have a look/drive some to decide + insurance Q

  • I reckon Z3M Coupe would fit the bill.

  • You should try a jap importer. I'm getting my forester through torque-gt and they've been amazing to deal with so far, I'm sure they would point you in the right direction. Rays are very jdm. Or you could just get rotas haha

  • The ones I'm looking at are the ones on eBay, chap wants (I think) strong money for them.

I've exchanged a few messages with him and he says that when he bought them they had slicks on, dated 2008. Now they may well have put older tyres on, but it does look a lot like they're ~10 year old track day wheels, for £2,600 plus £160 postage, and I'm not happy with that proposition.

A new set of BBS LM's, from Driftworks (so a UK company who seem decent) with a warranty, are just over £3k.

  • Was one near me ages ago, immaculate always, guy also had a thema a 832 and an m5 from about same time (H or G reg I think?). Sold the lotus charlton for around £16k and thought thta was so much for an old saloon car, probably around 2006 he sold it for that?

  • If I were to purchase a 240 estate, what engine and transmission (and possibly rear end) would be the most apposite?

I'd love to stay Volvo, but the RWD rear ends are either live axle, or hybrid live axle with a composite leaf spring that is a massive PITA.

Ideally I'd be able to buy a complete donor car and the Volvo, without hunting around for the donor too much.

I'd like an automatic gearbox, a naturally aspirated motor, and lots of power and torque.

Pretty close to my C55, frankly.

So! Other than a donor C55, what would work?

  • I know nothing about this but heard from friends who builds drifting cars that the driveline is often BMW 5-Series.

  • This and done, you reckon?

  • 286 bhp is a bit, erm, weak though.

  • Chevy small block?

  • Easy enough to order a crate LSx but then you are buying literally everything else - and I can't think of a UK car sold in large enough numbers that it's commonly available for cheap that has an SBC.

I was wondering about an XKR as the Jag BCD is the same as the Volvo BCD.

  • That's a decent shout - can't quite make out if it's auto or manual though.

Cheap, and very cheap parts (albeit shipped from the US, but we're about to unilaterally nuke all import tariffs and cut VAT to 5% whilst moving to a flat-rate income tax structure, so YOLO.

  • Never knew Haring did ley Maynz...

  • Recently saw one of two 1964 Panhard engined Le mans car. Not seen one in the flesh before, but fits in with a car to admire. From an 848cc panhard air cooled flat twin and could reach 140mph. Ok it had a supercharger but 78bhp and 140mph.

  • I reckon:

    • Monaro
    • Jag XJR
    • Mercedes C or E55
    • V10 M5 (for maximum "how the fuck is that old Volvo making that noise?" points
    • S600
  • (Not sure a V12 would fit, but think of the sound)

  • I'm gonna go out there and just say it. If you want a sleeper why not just get an rs6 avant, debadge it, and remap it?

  • Or get a v10 one before they're outlawed

  • Someone's already done that.

  • What about Bentley or RR?

Must be plenty of old V8-12 around with knackered body's and bulletproof engines.

  • Cost, really. I reckon a buggered S600 would be a lot less than a Silver Ghost

  • This.
My bro in Japan has TE37s and such on his auction radar constantly and sometimes they go for heaps, sometimes stupidly cheap.

Probably not so many in Porsche fitment though...
