Paul Baron, the owner of I Am Doner, a pair of kebab shops in Leeds and Harrogate, said his vegan kebab routinely outsold chicken, halloumi and falafel. Made from seitan, a meat substitute derived from wheat gluten, the “voner” kebab sometimes outsells the lamb alternative too.

I still wonder if it's going to be anything more than faddish--e.g., looking at how the vegan chip shop in Graham Road closed down quite quickly after demand presumably levelled off when people's curiosity was sated. Still, it can't be denied that the junk food angle got huge attention, being strangely inclusive.

  • Zads in Manchester seems to be going strong still, burgers and pizza is the menu. Seems to have lasted beyond any arbitrary fad threshold

  • Weird, I've lived about 10 minutes from I Am Doner since it opened, had never been, went last night for the first time and then read this thread with a quote from the owner. Would really recommend it if you're ever in Leeds! There's a fancy beer place a couple of doors down that lets you bring it in there to eat as well.
