Any recommendations for a GPS solely for navigation, decent battery life would be a massive bonus.

Etrex and it takes aa batteries

Cluncky but super functional.

There are the touch versions or the non touch. Have a look at both.

As above the etrex series coupled with two sets of eneloop Pro rechargeable batteries make a long lasting and rugged device.
