Less likely to snap those, I suppose

Saw that he’s been winning hill climbs on a steel bike with Etap and a DA7800 crank.

With a massive saddle to bar drop, and a forward facing seatpost. Think he's a tip for the 2020 national.

Aren’t those string spokes going to be mega low modulus, i.e. you’ll have to stretch the living **** out of them before there’s enough tension on them?
Can’t help feeling that for the strength you actually need, you could use a much thinner UD carbon bootlace and you’d have both weight and cross-sectional area (=aero) on your side. If UTS of a steel spoke is let’s say 550MPa up to maybe 750MPa, UD strength of a strong fibre like T1100S is pushing 3700-3800MPa in the right resin and stiffness will probably be about the same as the steel.
Equivalent of a 1.4mm butted steel spoke would be a 0.3mm carbon bootlace, which would look a bit scary, but that’s basically what it would be!

This is the hillclimb bike thread, get out of here with your actual engineering know-how and come back with a drill.

Not 2019?
-
• #309
It's some long one isn't it? Calum's a short duration smasher I thought.

• #310
Something ridiculous like 13.5w/kg for a minute...
-
• #311
Yep, 5km @ 5% - can’t wait! My power-to-weight curve is wack for 2 mins and less.
You’d be good at this years course no? Big engine but a lot lighter than most testers.
-
• #312
Maybe, but not when I have 130 miles on a bike clocked on Strava this year.
-
• #313
Long as that’s all hill reps you’ll be grand 😉
-
• #314
Yeah a total machine at the short sharp stuff. Averaged 930W for 1m18 on Swain's last year IIRC.

• #315
He just got a new 30 second power PB - 1238w!
-
• #316
That is just outrageous...
A shame that he wasn’t scouted for track when he was younger, his power has got to be up there for track sprints and Kilo. -

wat

• #318
Blimey, the concept of those string spokes is wild (says someone with no engineering knowledge at all).
-
• #319
Think he’s only been riding a few years.
-
• #320
He was a strong decathlete/heptathlete, so probably the right buildup of muscle fibres/build for huge sub 1:30 power.
-
• #321
That's nuts.
-
• #322
I’ll be honest, when I heard what he was doing on the short stuff I thought he was a kilo rider.
-
• #323
Any interest in two carbon saddles?
My days of pretending I was good are done, my days if pretending I'll get back to pretending I was good are also done. Can't remember their mass, but they're a good quick mass saver.
