  • I managed to fall on my arse and get a muddy stain on the arse of a pair of cream shorts. First washing suggests that this won't be coming off and it's an inconvenient place for a brown stain.

Thinking I may dye them navy or similar.
    Any thoughts on:
Will the dye take over a muddy stain?
How permanent are dyes nowadays? I don't want blue legs when they get wet.
Which dye should I use for best results?

    Cheers

  • You’ll definitely have a bit of run the first time they get worn/wet but pre rinsing them should help I suppose.

If it’s a heavy stain I’d hazard a guess that you’d still be able to see it.

  • You may well find that the dye takes ok on the fabric bit not on the stitching.

  • Procion dyes are the best in terms of colour fastness and intensity.

  • In terms of getting stains out, if you want to get serious I found that a mean degreaser can work wonders if the cloth can take it, something like turpentine.
