  • How many concurrently occurring disasters such as food rationing, slaughtering an entire generation of livestock, having significant shortages of for e.g. insulin, water purification chemicals, power from the connector to France for England and Ireland for NI etc etc etc can the UK state deal with, alongside potentially violent unrest in Northern Ireland and Scotland trying to secede?

  • We had to bring in Police from all over the UK to deal with the London riots- and we literally couldn’t do that now as we’re far below the number of police we had then.

  • Waiting with baited breath to see if Scottish Government takes the opportunity to rebrand our currency post independence. Back in 2014 people were suggesting we revert to the Bawbee and Groat, which would suit me fine.

The senior minister insists "the days of drift" have "ended" after reports Brussels has accepted the UK is leaving with no-deal.

  • I hope it won't come to this. Right now...I can't estimate the odds. Nearer 31 October though...I hope we won't reach this while hidden in a shed somewhere with candles, dollars, tinned food and a windup radio.

Time to open a euro account.

A mate of mine is diabetic...I better tell him to stock up. Just...in case.

The insanity of this is that the UK loses much much much more than they ever gain...yes they'll get rich. But not hundreds of billions rich.

(And I'm not even factoring in loss of life here... )

  • I doubt the EU will go as far as deny import of necessary chemicals / medicine and they'll send food.

They must be seen as reasonable for their own interest as well. And they may be annoyed but not THAT annoyed.

But the rest of the mess...cha...

  • As long as they can pay your salary in Euros... and continue paying it when the pound is worth €0.50...

  • They won’t deny it, well- radioactive materials they will as we leave Euratom, so people with cancer are fucked.

But our own ferry companies won’t allow trucks onboard until all customs clearances are done, and the lorries that can’t go out can’t come back again, that alone will do quite a job on shipping, before we get into the rest of it. We’ll be doing the vast majority of the damage to ourselves.

  • Stockpiling is going to prove difficult.
    Insulin needs fridge space.
Doctors, I'm guessing, won't prescribe for months at a time.

  • Buy a pig. Make your own.

  • This "refusing to negotiate" accusation going around really, really winds me up. It seems to me that they mean "they won't roll over and give up when we stamp our feet". And all of this from a bunch of spoilt brats who have been moaning on about how we must be harsh negotiators, but apparently only "we" are allowed to do taht.

  • I'm an utter noob in all this.

But will UK monetary policies and refusal to print cash willy nilly not lead to the 2008 crash (again!!!!) sort of scenario and another 10-20% drop in sterling and even more going to the 1% / foreign asset strippers rather than hyperinflation?

As that often requires an utter lack of monetary policy and overborrowing too.

But your character assessment I have to agree with... Was it not Bannon on BBC news saying the disruption hasn't even started yet? The ironing.

  • Yes but what about the evil EU.

Ultimately if they hate the EU, they are the brexiters friend, right?

(Not really but it seems to have come to that in people's heads)

  • Any idea at what rate they will convert your salary? Try and get an average of the last few years rather than taking any current spot rate.

  • refusing to negotiate

It comes across as a Dominic Cummings catchphrase, right up there with undemocratic backstop it’s got his grubby mitts all over it.

  • I have yet to come across a company willing to do that in my line of work.

If you can get it great, variance is about 4.5% since this shit show has been going for three years already.

I’ve just pegged my salary to the euro for the next twelve months. I’m only three weeks in and already up 2.7%

  • I hope it won't come to this.

It will, probably. At present, there is no reason for it not to do so.

  • I dunno, I still hold hope that for these people, power is more important than financial gains (they are already rich).

If rioting, medicine shortages, etc happens, Johnson and the Tories are finished for a long time. I think they'll happily row back at the last minute, blaming the EU when disaster is just round the corner.

Til then, they'll do everything they can to keep convincing the public they are trying to 'save democracy', and hoping the EU will blink on the backstop.

The way they have done this historically is to look at the pay scale for your role/level in the country you are going to. If you go to the US this is a big bonus, as they pay more - I don't know what my level would earn in yoorop, but there's one way to find out.

  • I need anti TNF alpha stuff.
    Where do I get this?

  • Grading aside, depending on which country you pick, holidays, hours and all the comp related bits and pieces could be a nice improvement, assuming works councils support your 'arrival'.

  • The corn laws debacle finished the Tories for a long time...they still went ahead though.

I hope you are right, but there is so much to be made in asset stripping etc. Johnson may just be played by others. Cummings is maybe more interested in power though.

I probably will head to France, it's the only foreign language that I learned (other than Latin, in which I got a better grade than I got for French), and therefore is my best chance of getting up to a respectable level in the shortest amount of time.

The challenge may be that I'd not want to be in Paris.

  • It has been bothering me for a while, but I finally realised who Dominic Cummings is the spitting image of

    Dominic Cummings

    Oskar Dirlewanger

  • I got historical HKD which is pegged to USD so got a pre-brexit rate.
