Cargo Bikes

I think it's an integrated Workcycles one, I don't think you can get them seperately (they built the whole thing with their own parts, as far as I know) - super handy as it doesn't turn when you steer.

The workcycles fr8 and gr8 look good for family life. I did nearly get one, there was a well priced one on ebay. But it was a rational decision, not an emotional one, and in the end I decided against it

But it's a lovely bit of utilitarian dutch design, just not sure how well it'll manage hills

I have 8-speed Nexus and can spin my way up Telegraph Hill / Pepys Road etc with a kid on the back. Saying that I'm a hill lover, my missus would walk it.

Generally, 90% of our London family riding is on the flat / less than 5 miles so it does mostly what we want it to, most of the time.

Elec assist would be nice, but pushed the cost up a ton.

I love my Workcycles Kr8 - now that my kids are getting a bit big and heavy for it I'm hoping to replace it with a Fr8 for supermarket runs (but I suspect an Elephant Bike would make better financial sense).

Biggest grievance for me and the main reason I’d still be eyeing up a proper cargo bike is that the load isn’t independent from the steering.

Mine are A-Rim DR300. Quite wide, stainless eyelets and properly hench. 36H though.

Yup, they all are that kinda cost, would love to know of one that isnt! Most folk seem to buy them on finance or some other kind of arrangement with a grant taking part of the cost over a long period 4 years etc, so the "extra thousand" doesn't hurt too much. Over the next few years they'll be more companies in the segment and maybe some lower prices. Theres an Italian front loading typr cargo bike that looks ols interesting, cheaper but heavier (which isnt that high on cargo bike buyers agendas!).

Here is an update of my bullitt showed a few page back.

I added light front and rear on dynamo. And we made the sides panel and the floor.

The floor is some 5mm waterproof resin, very light the two plates weight about 1kg.

I adapted a car isofix base (made for isofix and/or belt attachment) and straped it.

Very cool to make a ride with the little one which was also happy !

In store they have more choice in plate sizes. I paid mine less than 20€.

On the topic of garage space:

An anonymous party just sent me this photo of the garage at her mum’s house. Apparently her and her brother’s bikes are in there. As far as I can see, there’s space for at least 8 more bikes.

Thanks to this thread I’m lusting after a cargo bike very bad. Re-read this thread at least twice this week. I’m making a spreadsheet for an Omnium Mini build right now. Total overkill probably but it would make car free living much nicer...

@cake How are you getting on with your Mini?

Cycletrucks are good way to dip your toes into cargo without a full-commitment, but you outgrow them pretty fast if you catch the bug. I look forward to seeing your build!
