  • ^ I'm in a very similar boat. Nothing's turned up (within my very meagre budget) so far!

  • Our tandem showed up on Thursday from JD Tandems.
It was very well packaged and easy to assemble. Even the tyres had an appropriate amount of air in them.
We went on our first ride on it today and it rides really great. The Bengal mechanical disc brakes it came with works really well - perhaps even better than the bb7s I’m used to

We are looking to upgrade to a couple of brooks saddles in the near future and fitting my Pelago front rack and ride to a wedding in a couple of weeks.

Our tandem experience is off to a really great start!

  • So many tubes! So many fadez!

  • So now we have a tandem!
Its in decent shape, yet there is still a list of things to fix, i think its 1975 to 1979 age, at least thats when the frame was produced. Mix of mafac, ta specialities, campag record and suntour cyclone. Fairly normal size of frame which us useful and i would say very light compared to touring tandems of the same era.
Worried about regular campag record large flange hubs (in 32/36h!) on a tandem, the rear is possibly gubbed, front seems ok. Rims are those weinnman 27 1 1/4" concave items which are sturdy enough.
Been out on a small jaunt, brakes are reasonable but need to track down some good non expired mafac card ridge sized koolstop salmon, anyone know of a source? Then its going to get a full rebuild, future proof it. We have two other bob Jacksons of similar era, so it's amongst its own lol

  • Superb bike. Great colour too. I particularly love the two ‘Bob Jackson’ decals on the top tube, as if both captain and stoker are called Bob Jackson.

  • I've been meaning to post in here for a while... Our John Atkins (Lee Cooper built) tandem, affectionately named "Damien".

Pictured ready for London > the Mosel last year.

  • That’s very nice. Great setup and I really like that blue!
Whats going on at the headtube? New headtube for 11/8?

  • Thanks man, appreciate it.

You are 100% correct re: headtube. We bought it with a fuck-ugly rigid BMX style fork, and we sourced a replacement directly from John Atkins via Lee. I eyeballed the measurements and it turned out the original stem was shimmed.

That was an expensive mistake, not to mention only finally fixed about 3 days before we left for our 10 day tour 😁

  • So there’s no way I’m gonna get round to restoring this and liz hates tandems anyway so thought I’d offer it up on here before classic lightweights or eBay.

    FREE TO A GOOD HOME
Claud Butler USWB frameset and box of associated bits. I’ll have to dig the box out but pretty sure it contains the stoker stem, mafac cantis and lots of nuts and bolts. No wheel set unfortunately as were beyond saving.
Paint and chrome is rough but it’s def worth the effort. Have ridden a few and can confirm they go like the clappers.

Free to someone who’ll show it some love. It’s in E17

  • This is exactly the kinda tandem I wanted to find, but this should go to a different loving home.

  • Going to collect a tandem this weekend, what's the verdict, in the boot with the wheels off or on the roof?

On the roof would use this roof rack, but spacing would be narrower than the 1m suggested (~70cm)

  • in the boot

Inside is always best if it fits.

  • Just bought this for family fun. £300 :)

  • Jealous! That stoker might actually fit the lady.

  • It's going to be my 5 year old daughter om board!

  • She’s probably taller than my Nepalese gf tho

  • Great buy. My 5yo and 3yo LOVE ours, and we’ve already used it for multiple overnight trips up to 50km (in total over two days)

    Here’s ours with the 3yo

  • Amazing. That's exactly what I'm thinking. What stoker bars do you have?

  • @nonowt - collected it today
