You're wondering if the RAW file will contain enough information in blown out highlights and blacked out shadows to pull them back in post, right ? I guess just under and over expose a few photos and have a go ?
I have found jpg processing in phone is getting a lot better now. The jpg's out of my XR seem a lot nicer than the ones I was getting out of my 6S+ previously for example.
Yep, that's it. With a sensor something like twenty times smaller than my DSLR I was wondering how much range it could pull in to make editing a RAW worth it.
I suppose taking some pictures and playing with them in Lightroom would be the obvious answer.
Computational imaging is moving faster than sensor tech but phone sensors are sitting around 9 stops of DR anyway. They’re absolutely good enough to warrant deep editing.
