It seems my latest phone (Oneplus 3T) update now gives me a camera app that allows me to take RAW shots.
Is there any point to this? Are average phone camera sensors good enough to get something better than the processed jpg out?

The advantage of raw is you can edit better, in a non-destructive way.
So the question perhaps should be ... is the average phone user good enough to process something better than the jpeg?
