I have recently done the same—upgrade from Garmin Edge 520 to 530. The emergency alert thing is very bad and you should disable it immediately, but otherwise I’m pretty pleased. Hardware seems cheaper—buttons feel a bit wobbly for example—but battery life, useful base maps and general speed are huge wins. Interface slightly better but still a bit pony. Device is slightly larger, no big deal. Not earth shaking, but a solid improvement.
There was no emergency alert thing activated by default on my 530. Whenever I connect my phone there's a message saying 'Incident response disabled' or something along those lines.
