• I have recently done the same—upgrade from Garmin Edge 520 to 530. The emergency alert thing is very bad and you should disable it immediately, but otherwise I’m pretty pleased. Hardware seems cheaper—buttons feel a bit wobbly for example—but battery life, useful base maps and general speed are huge wins. Interface slightly better but still a bit pony. Device is slightly larger, no big deal. Not earth shaking, but a solid improvement.

  • Hmmmm, that's a shame that it doesn't seem as solid as the 520. I might hold out a while and wait for more reviews. Who knows, maybe the price will come down a fraction too... But overall I still think it's a better option than the Wahoo for the base maps. What's general speed?

  • By general speed I meant that by and large it seems quicker than the 520; more responsive to button presses and nippier showing maps etc. Re solidity the frame of the gadget seems solid enough, just the buttons feel a bit plasticky. Like a cheap digital watch, I suppose the plastic is just a pusher on top of the real button underneath which I hope is awesomely robust and durable.

The firmware still has annoying quirks; I can’t work out how to make it stop showing me (the same) tips about saving battery life etc.
