My decade old Garmin Legend HCx just gave up the ghost (RIP), and I need to replace it. Don't want performance tracking or texting the family my Strava segments - just a clear screen with a big map, with routes I can load from my phone or computer. Ideally something I can load OpenStreetMap on.
The Edge Explore looks pretty decent, and a fair price - anyone tried it? Should I be looking at anything else?

Not another Garmin etrex?
-
• #1379
Could do - they just feel a bit clunky, and thought the screen on the Explore looked a bit better. Have you got a current gen eTrex? Is it any good?

I have a 30x. It's only really a backup device for me because I'm normally using Edge 1000 or 1030 so I can't really comment. I had the HCx though and it's better than that. Still kinda clunky interface but once you know how it works, it's pretty solid.

Hammerhead Karoo has the best screen out there and is based on an android system so it's pretty user friendly.
Certainly not as polished as a Garmin system but they are constantly updating so it's getting better and better.
The mapping function is the best feature, literally like having Google Maps up on your bike.
You can load routes on the fly too, just hotspot your phone and connect via WiFi, then add routes using the website.

Oh and it's pretty massive. (Not meant for you @hippy)

Is the RWGPS estimated time, does the calculation use historical moving time or total time does anyone know?
Also is there anyway you can manipulate the estimated time feature on RWGPS? -
• #1385
Answer to the first seems to be moving time.
-
• #1387
Its annoying that you can't manipulate it.
Well other than loading a whole load of routes and times historically. -

Just got a Bolt, love it already. However, it will not show what power zone I'm in, which is weird.
I've updated my FTP and auto calculated zones in the app, logged into the Wahoo Fitness cloud, synced multiple times, deleted the field and re-added. Nothing. Just displays N/A.
It shows other power data when riding, average etc. just not the zone. Help!
EDIT: Figured it out. It will only show zones if you're recording a ride. Why it can show power all the time, but zones only when recording is anyone's guess

Does anyone know if you can still use the basic workout creation functions on Training Peaks when the premium trial runs out? It's a shame Wahoo don't provide this themselves
-

TLDR version - yes, but probably not in the way you'd like.
Long version:
You can still use the workout builder on the basic account, but can only have up to 6 workouts. You also can't use folders to keep workouts in separate sets. If you have your workouts in separate folders, when your free trial expires you will no longer be able to use them at all, just the ones in the "My Library" folder.
One of the other things you didn't seem like you can do with a basic account is actually schedule workouts. So I still had all the same workouts on my calendar I'd scheduled during the premium trial, but I couldn't add new ones, or move about existing ones if I wanted to change a rest day, for example.
On the Wahoo end, with a basic account you can only sync today's workouts. So you need to be on wifi and sync every single day to get the workouts on there. With the paid account you can sync over a week's worth of workouts, so you need to do it less often.
I just ended up stumping up for a paid TrainingPeaks account for this reason. I thought a basic account would be fine, or there would be good free alternatives, but that was not the case for me. The code 2019BC40Gold will get you 40% off subscription price, and I went for a year as it's the cheapest and I know I'll use it. The charge still hasn't come up on my credit card statement yet, but it was 85.68 USD, so should be around £6 a month.
If you want to build free workouts to use on your wahoo, check out https://ergdb.org/ http://www.goldencheetah.org/ to build the workouts, and the instructions here to load onto your Wahoo.
The reason I gave up on either of those is that you can only build workouts based on FTP targets, either as a percentage or an absolute value. However, because I'm really new to turbo training and do some leg speed sessions, I also wanted to be able to set cadence targets. If I'm in the middle of a tough session, the last thing I'm able to do is remember what cadence range I'm meant to be at, so I really value having that right there on my Wahoo.
Apparently ERGDB will soon be developed to also include cadence targets, but I have no idea how soon "soon" actually is. The tool was built by a guy in his spare time, so it could be a while! Supposedly Wahoo are also developing the ability to load and store your own workouts on the actual unit without using a 3rd party integration. Again, no idea on dates, though.
With that in mind, I figured that £6 per month and then seeing what the landscape is like in a year's time isn't the worst ever waste of money.
Let me know if you have more questions, as I just spent a lot of time researching the subject, and I'll be interested to hear what you end up going with.

Thanks for the reply, that's really helpful for me
It sounds like I should give the free options a go because I'm not necessarily that bothered about scheduling or cadence zones.
I don't have a turbo trainer - last night I used Elemnt Bolt + TP to do hill intervals outside. It all worked well except the 'press lap button to advance' option didn't do anything. I didn't need it in this case, but I think I might need to use the pause button instead sometimes.
Doing structured workouts outdoors probably requires a lot of customisation, so I can easily see that these bodge-type solutions might start to get on my nerves

My Garmin 510 finally gave up the ghost the other week so I replaced it with a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. First one arrived and the LCD died within about 10secs riding down my road due to small pot hole - a tiny bump basically. 2nd one has arrived and after I pressed the lap button the LCD screen has blurred/darkened.
Is just bad luck from a bad batch or are the screens all a little dodgy? Has anyone seen anything like this before or had any bad experience with Elemnts? I haven't seen much if any negative feedback compared to Garmin so a little surprised.

Mines been great for 10k so far

Good to hear some positive feedback - found an unoffical google group that seems to suggest it's a bad batch from an early production run, although whether it's true or not I don't know.
Purchased mine from Amazon for the quick delivery as I'm going on hols at the weekend but will return and purchase a 3rd unit direct from Wahoo I think...

Unscrupulous person passing off returned units as new on Amazon?
-
• #1396
Don't think so as it was on Prime. Seems like Amazon have dodgy batch though so will return and purchase elsewhere...

I'm trying to get the POIs that I've added to my RWGPS tracks to show up on Garmin and Wahoo, but neither seems to work...
Garmin (with Openfietsmaps loaded) just shows the POIs from the maps, rather than the custom ones I added to the route. I've been exporting the route as a .gpx track and copying it into the NewFiles folder on the Garmin.
Wahoo Elemnt routes don't show anything at all when synced with RWGPS files over wifi??

Where are you adding and exporting your gpx track from.
If you open the gpx track file in a text editor does it include the track and the waypoints( POI's). see below a gpx file containing three wp (waypoints/poi) and a trk (track.<time>2019-07-20T10:06:40Z</time> <name>A82</name> <sym>Flag, Blue</sym> <type>user</type> <extensions> <gpxx:WaypointExtension> <gpxx:DisplayMode>SymbolAndName</gpxx:DisplayMode> </gpxx:WaypointExtension> <wptx1:WaypointExtension> <wptx1:DisplayMode>SymbolAndName</wptx1:DisplayMode> </wptx1:WaypointExtension> <ctx:CreationTimeExtension> <ctx:CreationTime>2019-07-20T10:06:40Z</ctx:CreationTime> </ctx:CreationTimeExtension> </extensions>

I'm adding POIs in RidewithGPS, then exporting the file as a gpx track (checking the box which says 'Include POI as waypoints). When I open it in text editor, I get a list of the waypoints at the start of the file, followed by the track (see the screenshot below).
It does appear that the symbol/ icon fields are just 'dot' rather than anything useful though... The other issue I'm having is the Openfietsmaps comes with its own heap of POIs, including carparks, which are massively cluttering up the map. Is there a way of cutting these out?

That sounds reasonable. You could probably DIY but they should be able to do it and maintain the same level of waterproofness, etc.
