• Sounds like something else was going on there. The maximum fine allowed by law in Switzerland for 5km/h over the speed limit is 40 CHF on minor roads, 20CHF on a motorway. This rises to about 400 CHF for 20kmh over the limit from memory, after that there is a sliding scale of bans and means tested fines.

  • Agreed. It's why I prefaced with with 'apparently'. I was with him, but didn't buy the 5km/h. The guy has an affinity for a heavy wrist, and I was quite far back as I don't like overtaking needlessly.
He alleges they said it was 5 above, they weren't particularly happy. It turned a bit heated.
Judging by previous scenarios, pretty sure he was way over a ton (mph).

The 6000 however, was a legit fine (or confiscation). Took him a while to pay it off. Whether what he said was true or not, we still argue about it from time to time.
The amount though really hit home.

  • 6000 is entirely possible, it just means that he was speeding by a lot more than 5kmh and 20 days of his previous year day rate equalled 6k. If he was Swiss, he would have lost his license too.

  • Over a ton MPH I think would put him in clink. Both guys I know that got nicked were definitely doing a over 100kph in 80 limits up in the passes. I've gone over 80kph downhill on my bike...twist the throttle a bit on a superbike in second and you're doing over a 100kph.
I think the principle complaints aside from the monetary are how zealous and sneaky the cops are with the traps.

Regardless I'm not going anywhere over there again in a hurry but if I was, I'd spend my dough in France and Italy.
