  • I'm not saying it's a good one, but it's certainly a cheap one...

Edit - wait, probably not useful for you :)

  • @mcmyk is correct. Mk4's were pretty crap.

    Mk1 GTi - Yes
    Mk2 GTi - Yes
    Mk3 GTi - No (go for a VR6 instead)
    Mk4 GTi - No (go for an R32 or VR6 4Motion instead)
    Mk5 GTi - Yes
    Mk6 GTi - Yes
    Mk7 GTi - Yes

  • Thanks mate - I'm looking at chrome wraps and there seems to be a lot of them online, covering a car in mirrors wouldn't be that different would it?

  • Call your insurance company and ask them - some won't cover a car that has been wrapped, so I'd certainly want their opinion before covering one with mirrors.

  • It's not necessarily the insurance just me worried about being pulled over and having to end this tour...

  • If you are pulled over and you don't have valid insurance would that be bad?

  • Covering a car in mirrors to drive around Europe in the height of summer, like a mobile blinding death ray doesn't sound like a good idea. It sounds literally like many, many accidents waiting to happen kind of an idea. I can't see Euro-plod being impressed with that plan either, guaranteed pull and cavity search I'd say.

  • There’s much worse ways to spend £1650 though, I’d roll about in that as a cheap daily if I needed to

  • Is this one of these "rallys" where a load of wankers drive around Europe in borderline interesting cars with shit wraps, dressed as American police officers (and in othersuch hilarious getups) while enjoying extremely "glamorous" parties en route?

  • This, the mk4 is only acceptable as a diesel runabout comfort wagon (and estate) or as a tidy R32 daily driver, not quick but well built and makes you feel almost important.
The na GTI (family had one) was slower than a house but comfy, and the 1.8t versions weren't a huge amount better (you had to fiddle with them).

Mk4 golf are better as a TT than as a golf.

Mk5 Gti are worth getting, they rust a bit but now cheap as they'll ever be and fun/quick B road basher.

  • Or as a Leon Cupra R

  • I had a red 3 door GTi for a while and absolutely loved it. Some simple mods give decent power - if you can, go for an anniversary edition - 180bhp off the bat, ko3s turbo, easily remapped to 220, plus some great interior touches. Loads of fun to blast around in :)

Handling is not so great but some polybushes and coilovers also stiffen it up a bit.

  • Haven't seen one in years, but yes! In that bright red or yellow colour for sure.

  • Who was the chap who liked the Audi A2?

Found a cheap petrol A2 and it has issues so was wondering how easy to trace when buying to confirm if it is the ECU, coil, injectors or something else.

  • That Ultima RS looks the absolute bollocks, hypercar performance and Group C looks for 60k (well, FROM 60k)

  • I have an A2- Bloody great cars, I only have experience of the diesels though. I also have a Vag code reader which you are welcome to borrow from east london to plug in when you view it.

  • My Audi mechanic friend just bought one for his girlfriend. Be aware that some spares are unavailable. I think he mentioned the window wiper particularly.
Great cars, apparently Audi made a loss for everyone made. Space frame - the same as his S8.

  • In that case can you ask him ;)

  • I like them, if i ever need a smaller car again it'll be one of those

  • I had a MkIV R32, absolutely loved it. Still regret getting rid 11 years later

  • Knew I'd forgotten something

  • You can't park there!

  • Open a thread and ask for advice

  • I just paid it, I knew I should have checked to see if I’d crossed into the zone but totally forgot. I’ve setup autopay now, so no more £80 fines.

  • Who was the chap who liked the Audi A2

    Guilty.
When they are good ,they are very good, when they are bad...
Don't by a cheap 1.6, that is why they are cheap. If it is a 1.4, coil packs. Go diesel for reliability (and disdain).

They are on the up at the moment, in the last couple of months two magazines' Autocar and a Classics one have featured them as modern classics with buyers guides. The A2OC.net is great for info, and enthusiastic projects. You'll also hear many tales of woe from 1.6 owners.
