Thanks man.
To be honest (in case this didn't come across clearly in my post above) I really don't bother, I was merely wondering whether those "oval" things are a second try at selling people wonky chainrings - as has been done what, twenty years ago? with "Biopace".

Yep. Seem to be sticking around far longer though.

Nothing is new in cycling.

First hit on google throws up a Columbia from 1893 with oval chainring.

I agree with that. Would be lovely if it sat further back and lower like a Tubus.
Though I love having the platform for commuting.

So if the Oval Chainring people can't decide if it's horizontal or vertical where the flat section should be, the logical consequnce would be quadratic chainrings, no? ;)
Four flat sides, easy on all the positions. -

But then again, i dont own a low trail setup so cant really speak from experience.. but i do have lots of mid-high trail bikes i only front load, and they work just fine.
My 2p, even without a load, the weight of the rack alone still help, my low trail bike never been ridden without a handlebar bag as it's pretty much integrated to the bike (still be able to take it off and on), what nice is that you don't think "I can't wait to take off the bag so I can have fun" with that geometry.

I really like the look of the Tubus Grand Expedition rack.. A bit heavier than the Blackburn rack tho.

Yes, this exactly.
I like to cycle camping. With a regular trail bike I'd look forward to dropping everything off at the campsite and then going riding. But a low trail bike combined with packing fairly light makes the ride there and back more enjoyable.
That said, it's not necessary at all. Ride what you've got. -

I thought about the Blackburn too. Looks very good.

What cheap frameset / whole bike options do I have if I'm looking for:
- drop bars
- discs
- steel
- 26" or 650B
- clearance for plush tyres maybe, but not necessarily
I probably won't be buying new, and I plan on getting such a bike next year or so. Thanks in advance!

I have a CNC bikes gravel one frame.
Cost 190€. For the price it's been excellent.
Had an older pinnacle fork on it, now one of those masi low trail forks bought on here. Only XL and s left though.
Wouldn't mind something without pf and a bit lighter, but that will have to wait till I go custom. -

Thought you functional types might be able to enlighten me... Sourced a few bits for Madame Jambon's tourer, what's this cable for on a front rando style bag? Thought it might be something for security but not 100% sure

Loops under the stem

Thanks, why?
-
• #21697
To stop the whole assembly sliding round the bars and dropping forward when it's heavy/you hit a bump. Probably easiest to put the two main clamps on, then undo one end of the wire, loop it under the stem, and re-fasten it.
