The thread still seems to be ok. I just assumed it had gradually worked loose and wondering how to avoid that.

Ah I see. Totally misinterpreted what you meant by falling apart. I thought you meant that the screwbar was removable without you unscrewing it.
A dab of loctite would be perfect. Not sure which one to suggest though, would have to be whatever their most temporary one is. Maybe somebody else on here knows more about loctite!

It should be fairly obvious what the problem is. Either the small piece of the two piece screwbar is missing or has lost its threads?
EDIT: Having said that, I know that the Helson Skindiver comes with one piece screwbar...maybe the new SDs are too
