It's not that odd. That's how most TTs work (and the Tour, and everything else that's timed).

It's about fastest time to complete all the stages. Not first across the line at the last stage.

I guess that's true. But with TTs the person who completes the course in the shortest time wins, you can't stop on a roundabout and have a rest and stop the clock!

It's just different from other ultras. A multi-stage race, with the option to choose the length of time between stages.

MTB Enduros and rallies though work this way. But I don't know what they do at the 'gaps'. I presume they have time limits to get started again.

Rode Gritfest this weekend gone which is very similar format, along with other Racing collective events.

The vets winner (Oli Beckinsale) beat me by over 30 mins, but came in an hour after me. Like you say, just how it works.

I should have known that this is how it works as I actually looked at doing some of their shorter events, eg CotsDuro, to do some off-road practice. But inevitably I didn't have time and it didn't come off. Or I CBA to travel all the way to the start when I'd realised where it was.
Look like fun events, though.

Yeah, as people have said, it’s loosely based on enduro mtb racing:

Riders are timed in stages that are primarily downhill, with neutral "transfer" stages in between. The transfer stages usually must be completed within a time-limit, but are not part of the accumulated time.

However in this case the transfer is actually the checkpoint. Confusingly from what my friend has told me about mtb enduro, you can ride back up and re-do the timed sections however this all adds to accumulated fatigue.

If I ever do look into dirt stuff I'll have a look at their events. If there's more info about that Morocco gravel thing next year I'd be keen to see that.

Yeah, but redoing a 2min downhill run that you crashed on the first time is different to redoing a 600k stage because you were a bit slower than expected ;)

There are some parts of the Pyrenees where hotels are few and far between. It’s much less populated and commercialised than the Alps.

That was the impression I got with 2min on hotels.com last night. Which is why I started reconsidering the bivvy. Pity, coz I love filling my saddle bag with warm clothes rather than sleep kit. Mmm, warm clothes...

Yeah, I'm kinda looking for more than pics though. Start date, distance, climb, freeroute? etc.

Febuary. Around 1400km, climbing, fixed route. 5ish days to win. Gravel bike 40c tyres suitable.

I'm not sure I'll be able to take more time off but it's on my radar.

I don't want another bike though but a singlespeed mtb might not be best for a quick (for me) finish. Ha, I could take the grrl's Sequioa! "oh, sorry about that paintwork darling, I'm pretty shit off-road"

It sounds interesting. I've ridden a bit off road in the high atlas and it was great.
Not sure if I'd get time off to do it though. Also February will be dark nights, not a showstopper but you get to see less and it can be a bit more lonely in the dark
