  • Ah yeah good point...

  • As I understand it, DIY are a type of Perm, so you'd need to submit the whole route as a DiY.
IIRC it used to be Calendar Events/Perm/DIY Perm.

  • Yeah looks like I can basically copy over the route and most of the controls from the calendar event, then add a few extra controls of my own to make up the 400km, and send a GPX when I've ridden it.

    Seems straightforward enough (he says)

  • Doing the NC500 on Monday-Wednesday next week.

    Weather looks eugh

  • Assuming you are based in London as it's Paul's route (who manages DIY's for south) I would advise checking with him as a courtesy, before you submit it.

  • Wander Wye went pretty well, except a broken spoke and a soaking on Sunday morning.
Wind was a pain throughout, didn't seem to get the tailwind we were due from Saturday felt more generally gusting on Sunday.
    How did others go?

  • Had a Travel Lodge booked at Devizes so the section from Chepstow to there was really cold! They closed the Severn bridge to traffic as well so going across with no one else on was pretty cool.

Sunday was ok apart from a puncture but was impressed by @hippy strong thumbs when he took my tyre off the rim :)

  • Other than spending too long faffing at Chepstow in the morning, and getting caught in rain, I felt pretty fresh at finish. Enjoyed seeing a bit of wildlife muntjac deer, bats and the alike. Poppies were stunning, and the sunset on the climb from Blwch was fantastic.

Also the realisation that the frame bag I made in a rush on Thursday wouldn't let me get at bottles. Luckily had velcro straps.

  • Yeah the bridge bit was cool. What bike were you on?
I was on a blue canyon green bar tape.

  • Sunday had a fair bit of faff but saved for the afternoon.
I had a rough last hour or so had to take 15 mins to myself when I got back.

  • Also the beer at end was ace. Can't remember last time I had 4 pints of anything.

And the baguette shop in Stow was great too.

  • Where did you end up sleeping? Chepstow?

  • Haha nice to meet you and nice to be able to help out. I really hate tyre levers so have developed my technique over years of cursing and swearing.

Sat morning was fun catching up (I started late) and then riding with some peeps though early on had some dickhead get out of his car presumably to have a pop because we were riding two abreast, but then immediately got back in when he saw us close up.
Sat afternoon/eve was really good - I'd dried off and the scenery was lovely, took some pics but phone can't do the light justice.
Sunday morning was a bit annoying, seeing how long I would give it before putting a jacket on. I think after two hours I was starting to get a bit chilly so caved in and then of course the sun comes back out.
The manned controls were great. Had a good sleep after a decent feed. Was a bit disappointed the Apple Cart cafe wasn't open Sun morning as I was really looking forward to a warm coffee after all the rain.

  • Good to meet you again - it's usually the other way around though - seeing people in cycling kit and then not recognising them in normal clothes ;)

What wheels are you running? If you're gonna race on them will make sense to have them properly trued and tensioned if one has gone they'll be out.

  • In the hotel at the services just after the bridge.

  • Haha yeah true, its funny when you've been riding with someone for an hour or two, you stop they take their glasses and lid off and you don't recognise them.

Hunt 32h, 30mm carbon. Tricky as on one hand good that despite breaking a spoke they were fine which is why I chose them, on the other annoying that it broke in the first place.
I'll have a closer look tonight once I get it out the car but yeah a proper service is on the list.

  • Pretty sure I was riding for a bit with @jakemcree if he was on an orange canyon?
Slamming cleats back stopped Achilles from flaring considering they had been sore all week, but the consequential overlap nearly had me off when I was tired and forgot.

  • I run 32h for the same reason. I use @scherrit built wheels though as I know his builds are hippy-proof.

  • Yeah, orange Endurace I think with 50mmish carbonz

  • Yeah good point, definitely will do that.

  • I was on a red Canyon Endurace. Ah yeah, I thought I recognised your bike actually.

  • Booked a hotel room in Loughborough (400k mark) for Willesden's Last Gasp 600 this weekend.

  • Just realised I was rather lucky!
Drove home with my front they axle on the roof!!

  • Good to meet you too. Found a fiver on the floor while I was fixing that puncture though so silver lining...

  • Anyone ever done the Faffers 400, route looks fairly fun?

Might cross it off on a perm as it's the last distance I need for an AAA SR.
