I believe at least two, maybe three bikes I’ve ridden a lot has had a steerer halfway between the two stem bolts, and I still have my front teeth for now.
One of the bikes was mtb, too.
Would definitely recommend no bunny hops if you have a short-short steerer.

Is there generally a big difference between street and track versions of 70s/80s cranksets, e.g. Campagnolo Record Pista/Strada, Dura-Ace and so on?
Except for the inner chainring thingies that is.

No. There are a number of small differences, more so as you move from 70s to 80s.

Taking my godparents for dinner on Wed evening and probably Thus lunch. They have never been to the UK before and are only in London for just over 2 days. Any suggestions? Obviously they are gonna want to see the typical tourists spots so any suggestions for places to eat in central London would be appreciated.

I need a car mount for my mobile so I can use it as a sat nav.
Will be used mainly on hire cars so not looking for anything permanent and won't know what the car is until I get it. Will have to fly with it as well so compact would be a bonus.
Any suggestions? Cheers.

This design works well - strong grip at both ends, lots of range of motion so it should work regardless of the angle of whatever flat surface you attach it to. Unfortunately it's not available from either the supplier shown or the supplier I got mine from, but it's a generic Chinese product so somebody might have it

This is the same base and arm but with a different handset holder

I’ve got one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Air-Vent-Magnetic-Mount-black/dp/B01EMV5X86/
Works well and it’s small. If you have a phone case you get just fit the magnet between the case and phone. Instead of sticking it to the phone.
Only issue I can see is it might not fit in the air vents of some modern cars?

Just a warning, that one @farewell suggested is great and easy to use, but very very easy to forget in hire cars as I found out to my own cost. I lost 2 and bought a big one that suckers on to the window screen so I couldn't forget it by accident.
One negative now that I think about the magnetic kind is that in small hire cars with a reasonable size phone, the steering wheel or control stalks could block the screen a bit.

Ta, will cross post, to be honest, I am really skint at the moment but my godfather helped me a lot with my mum was ill and when she passed, so I can't really skim on treating them... Traditional chinese culture means they will offer to pay but I cannot allow that to happen, not when they are in my home tuff.

Does anyone have a favourite US based alternative to Screwfix (i.e. general hardware monger)?
-
• #97446
Cheers all. Given I don't know what car I'll be getting until I get there normally then I guess the windscreen sucker option is the best bet.

I preferred this to the other one linked. Had both and the other didn't stay still in the vents.
Despite this apparently being for a CD slot, it actually fits the gap in the vent perfectly and holds it far more securely.

My Godparents want burger and lobster, and hard rock cafe!!! Kill me now!
Cheers @mdcc_tester, that makes sense. It's also a good test of whether your stem bolts are tight enough i.e., if tightening the pre-load screw after the stem bolts causes the steering to stiffen up then your stem bolts weren't tight enough. I guess in normal use the stem would turn on the steerer before it would work its way upward, but I think the fear is that if the steerer is too short then the stem-steerer interface could become slightly conical and work its way upward, so tightening the pre-load would definitely help.
