It's hilarious/depressing hearing the other contenders - Raab was on the radio just now - not wading in to condemn Gove outright, but not offering any particular opinion either ("It's not for me to comment..."), thereby waiting to see where the story goes, and obviously hoping it blows up and wipes him out...

Matthew Paris on Johnson. Sadly all too true. He is our Trump.

Max Hastings, ex editor of Telegraph and boss to Boris Johnson: “Boris Johnson is one of the most brilliant and entertaining journalists that I know but the tragedy is he thinks he is Winston Churchill but the reality he is Steve Coogan”.

Hopefully Rory Stewart is going to put pressure on Boris Johnson rather than let him get away with an outrageously stage-managed candidacy whereby he’s trying - and so far succeeding - to hide from all public scrutiny...
That said, even if Johnson does get forced out into the open, it seems likely that if he were to face any difficult criticism, he would dig into the warchest of 'dead cat' stories that Lynton Crosby will doubtless have been gathering, thereby diverting attention onto something or someone else. And then just run down the (very short) clock of the leadership election.

Listening to the FT Politics podcast they said Johnson is doing exactly the same as when he ran for the mayors office - suddenly being very publicity shy and only appearing in very tightly controlled appearances. And lots of behind the scenes work for hustings etc.
The real battle is for the second candidate as either a Stop Boris vote with no one really taking a clear lead but Gove has yet to make a move. Hunt/Javid both middle of the road candidates for the membership apparently. Raab and Leadsome expected to drop out of the race tomorrow.

Yeah, advantage Johnson from this. More ruthless manoevres from his team and supporting press.

Listening to the leadership candidate speeches....truly nauseating.

Somebody quite useless backing into the Tory leadership position amid chaos and disunity has been the norm, not the exception, for the last quarter of a century.

I'd almost rather stick with Theresa May...

Rory Stewart says he has 8 MPs backing him, and is taking open questions on R4 right now...
[And actually did a decent job against a few deranged Brexiteers among others]
