  • Whatever you go for, I would want to play the thing before buying it. When I got my tele I played loads before settling on a standard MIM - it wasn’t the best plugged in but a pickup swap (custom shop Texas something or other) solved that.

  • I just bought a black MIM tele and it’s the nicest guitar I’ve played for a while. American Fender have more exotic hardware but that’s a cheap upgrade for a MIM guitar that plays well.

Alas, one of my mates just had all his guitars nicked and is struggling a bit so my new tele is going to him.

Tobacco burst, maple neck is one of my fave strat combinations.

  • Or something like this might do... a bit dinged, mind. https://www.whitstableguitars.co.uk/fender-st-362-us-2ts-mij

  • @Dramatic_Hammer I should be okay as I play lots of really awful guitars at work, which are abused to the extreme and anything that's half decent will be fine for what I'm looking for.

@Jung Yes, Tobacco burst looks great.

@Pifko and @rickster They're great finds, but a little too expensive for me at the moment, as I need to get a wah-wah pedal and probably a little practice amp too. I'm not sure I need anything quite that nice...

  • Keep enough aside for a tortoiseshell scratchplate.

  • Get one of these instead of a practice amp and plug it in your stereo mate. I've had mine since they first came out and still really like it. They're super handy if you're trying to nail a particular sound on the cheap.

  • Really?!? Where can you get good tort these days anyway? Most of it looks so cheap compared to the old stuff...

  • I hear great things from friends about the Yamaha THR series amps, cheap as chips too...

Looks really good. And the reviews are great. Actually, looks fucking great!

  • Wow they do look cool. Never heard of them (absolutely par for the course.)
    ...frantic googling ensues.

  • Instant WANT! That's like every bedroom noodlers dream package. And with a battery too. Damn.

  • Putting 11s and a tunomatic on there to sort all my issues, I'm sure. Slapping a compensated nut on there too.

  • A used one popped up here for $150, was so tempted but REALLY don't need another amp!

  • You'll probably be fine then, 10s and massive whammy abuse were probably the culprits for me...

  • Actually I'm not sure about black body-black pickups-tort pickguard. Pickups have to be white for it to work:

But I also don't think black-white-black looks that good.

    Black pickguard instead.

  • Consider also the Vox Adio Air GT. If you can get past the fact that it looks like a Louis Vuitton purse, it sounds great and has lots of useful functionality.

  • I think all strats should be Olympic White (and on very rare occasions Fiesta Red)... But I hate them with a passion so what do I know...

  • I like the Black / Black, 70s headstock look but I much prefer it with the maple neck.

  • Agreed. Dave Gilmour also thinks so.

  • I went thu the “which practice amp?” Thing a few pages back and got a Yamaha THR something or other. Love it love it love it. So much fun. Honestly best guitar related purchase in years.

  • Has anyone got any experience of the Hudson Sidecar?

I was just thinking the other day that the TS9 didn't really have the range of sounds I was after then I saw this mentioned repeatedly in a thread on Fretboard.

Watched a few demo videos on YouTube and now I'm convinced I need one.

  • £2 from the dump. Needed work, strings and a saddle. It’s been butchered and had identifying features crudely removed but it’s a Yamaha fg140 Nippon Gakki from mid 1970. I knew as soon as I picked it up from the neck.

    Sounds good too

  • Building a Timmy clone pedal. God knows why - there are plenty of cheap ones available to buy that have been put together by professionals - but if it all goes well, then I’ll be building a Hot Cake next.

  • Nice find! Those old Yamahas are great! Like your stuffed fox head too. Related to your username or just weird coincidence?
