I not sure why Alaphilippe was such a nailed on favourite like I would never fancy Sagan or GvA for the race. It is more the climber's monument. Good to see Quickstep fall short on this one.

I think you could probably class Alaphilippe as a climber; he won two mountain stages and the polka dot jersey in the tour last year

Alaphilippe basically has the same punchy climber strengths as Valverde, but not as dopey.
Decent TT as well. Could do very well in GC as protected rider, but possibly too boring for him.

Good point. I always think of him as a puncheur that can climb a bit.
