In some ways maybe, but in other bikes, the snorkel faces downwards towards the front wheel, so not sure if that's it's main purpose. I still wouldn't remove it though.
Someone might chip in, but wouldn't the design act as some soft of ramjet as opposed to sucking everything in?
There's always a debate about it, but with EFI bikes, I doubt removing it would make any difference apart from a raspier intake noise.
Fitted a DNA air filter & "race" cover today.
Not sure it will work well in the wet as the tank/saddle junction is right above the opening, meaning that water could potentially drip into it.
Time will tell!
The bike sounds a bit more meaty, I can't comment on performance yet.
The Yamaha original air filter is also an oiled one and the original filter cover snorkel is made of soft rubber. I could have technically just removed that snorkel to get more air in, but the DNA hole is about twice the size so will definitely bring more air in.
