  • I'd say he got a ticket for riding with a wheel shaped improvised explosive device

  • Mate, that's the fixeh Popo penalising you for HHSB crimes against track bikes...

  • We had about three or four bikes come in to our place in N16to have a front brake fitted after the Allison incident, but it’s gone quiet since then. We do have a policy of not working on a bike unless it has working brakes though. It’s pissed a few people off and usually leads to shitty Google review but it could end in tears for us so it’s not worth it.

  • Agreed, as a business it's really not worth the risk - I fully get that.

Now it seems a bit more 'underground' I wonder how many riders still ride brakeless or if those that were don't want the hassle so popped a brake on.

  • that's a real police office from the city of london police force (red checkers on the uniform). Probably the one cop squad that has enough manpower to stop sweet fixie rides on the street, as they have about 1500 staff and technically only cover the square mile of the city of London. That's about the same manpower as the Bedfordshire police, so it's no wonder they're giving that dude a ticket; there is literally nothing for that cop to do all day but wander around with his Nintendo switch

  • Nah that is bullshit.

I have organised three Drag-Sprint events plus two Triple T's in the City.

20-40 racers each event, another 20 spectators, all under CCTV, zero brakes, ZFG.

  • Damn, what kind of fine did they give you, if any?

  • Bummer. Bit off topic - 25.4 shred bars?

  • Damn, what kind of fine did they give you, if any?

Running a QR on a fixie.

  • The bars are Nitto 809aa.

What happened was that I ended up stopped at the lights pointing north just before the set of lights to cross the road between Liverpool st station and the police station, I was behind a cab and in front of the police.
Lights went green and we moved away, the cab in front suddenly applied it's brakes and I skidded as not to crash (yes it was an intentional over the top sik whips kid). We all continued on and as we were approaching the next lights they turned amber but I decided it fine for me to continue through and didn't expect the police to go through also. I looked back and noticed they had gone through the red and put their lights and sirens on.
    I pulled over.
Here it became fairly amusing but I didn't want to get a fine or be searched so nodded and agreed after a while of playing dumb - officer points at handlebars and asks what's missing - I reply "a bell? That would be a nice addition actually, yeah" this question repeats and I give dumb responses such as a speedo, mudguards, a basket etc.
The officer goes on to mention Charlie Aliston's case but couldn't tell me his name or much detail of it other than a woman dying because the bicycle didn't have brakes. They go on to ask where people purchase such bikes, they very amusingly tell me that if I changed my rear sprocket to one that means you can roll and put a back brake on then that would be legal, they tell me they're cyclists as well - ugh.
I play along with all of this as to avoid the fine, they even took a photo of the bike and have it on their database now along with my details.

Just as they're walking away I mumble and get their attention only so I can tell them that they had actually informed me wrong and that they should brush up on their knowledge, I tell them what the law is as far as I'm aware re brakes and reflectors etc. They got fairly annoyed and then asked how I independently brake the front wheel.

They told me not to ride the bike as it was illegal and that I should get a train home or leave it at a friend's etc.
Cheeky fuckers drove off northbound, did a u turn to come back to the station but fortunately I was walking the bike north on the pavement as they drove back past me, fairly sure had I been riding then I would've been pulled again and fined.

  • Have you considered cycle training?
    Cheeky fuckers, you say....

  • No offence, but it does sound like you were a little bit of a dick to them!

  • so I can tell them that they had actually informed me wrong and that they should brush up on their knowledge, I tell them what the law is

Haha that was always going to end well

  • ust as they're walking away I mumble and get their attention only so I can tell them that they had actually informed me wrong and that they should brush up on their knowledge, I tell them what the law is as far as I'm aware re brakes and reflectors etc.

Hah yeah - this sounds like a moment of epic level self sabotage

  • Oh for sure, not denying that.
Just couldn't believe I actually got pulled over for it.

  • Has anyone been pulled off while riding brakeless?

  • Is that a euph?

  • It’s not the police that have stopped me in the past for riding brakeless, but Brompton riding, hi-vis wankers. Happened 3 times shortly after that Charlie Alliston killed the lady crossing the road (RIP).

Things like “you are meant to have brakes you little shit”, “that’s against the law!!!!!!”, and lots of hatred stares. Fairly shortly after that I decided my days of riding fixed on the street were over anyway.. just save it for the track on rare occasions now

  • just save it for the track on rare occasions now

you are meant to never have brakes on track you little shit

  • My normal response is either 'get fucked you brompton cnut' a little laugh or 'shut up you mug' (well cockney even though I'm from the midlands)

  • You aren't this weird on twitter.

  • Work. I've not slept much.
