OK so those of you who have seen my thread in Misc & Meaningless will know the spooky isn't happening now.
I've been pondering hard about my options for a replacement. Whilst out on a particularly enjoyable xc blast on my Stanton this morning, I considered what it might be like to add a set of drop bars to the Sherpa. I had been considering a Mason Bokeh, then latterly the Mason ISO then thought that for significantly less money I could get a second stanton, buy another manitou Magnum fork (currently reduced further to £275 on CRC) and I'd still be £500 better off than the ISO.
But was concerned about the fit. So I lashed on my drop bars intended for the spooky and now I'm even more convinced. The fit is actually pretty good. Getting the tape measure out and doing some comparisons, I think a 60mm slammed stem will give me a perfect position. Obviously a little higher at the front than my roadie but I could interchange my 650x3.0 wheels/tyres and 29x2.25 wheels/tyres between bikes, and have enough spare change to buy a 3rd set of 700x42 cx wheels/tyres.
I'm struggling to see the downside. I'd have to ditch my 1x 42T quark Road cranks destined for the spooky for a mtb 1x 36T (or whatever the max chain ring is I could fit) but I could live with that.
Yes, brilliant plan. It’s what I wanted after my gravel drop bar mountain bike thing broke down, but opted for a more traditional and versatile combo due to lack in funds and space.
