  • True. Although dunno what the running tally is now since so many holdouts have turned in favour of the deal...

  • If the house can't come to an agreement then the only options must be either to extend or revoke article 50, Shirley?

  • Is this where the term naysayers comes from?

Call a GE. Same thing as a people's 2nd ref

  • Really isn't the same. GE is not single issue, ref is, personality of party leaders matters... Loads of reasons the result isn't cross applicable

  • What we would have to hope is that in a GE the parties would lay out their Brexit positions clearly and we would vote on that basis. But yeah I think after GE we will just end up with more of the same.

Not to mention that single-issue voting is fucking stupid

  • It feels like someone in charge just got off an agile training course.
    "Guys let's find out more!"

In all srsness: we're going to end up with some county right wing cunt in charge of negotiation.

  • True. But that is not how the elctorate will see it. It will be fought on a single issue or become a proxy for that single issue.

  • So now:

    • MV3 on Friday if May can get it past Bercow
    • IV2 on Monday, with some process that results in a clear winner, if May can't pass her WA or if Bercow won't allow a vote on it
  • I'm sorry but that's really not how that works. Neither of the two big parties will officially back a revocation of A50. Which in turn means the outcome will by default appear to be some kind of backing of Leave. Beyond that however, it doesn't say fuck all about what people want, as it's not even like all of Labour or all of the Tories are each united behind one clear path forward.

And finally, what is needed here isn't another Leave / Remain vote anyway, there need to be concrete, realistic, actionable choices.

  • Not sure why she'd bother with MV3 if she doesn't have the votes? The not an inch'ers in the DUP and at least a portion of the ERG still seem dead set against it.

  • I reckon Bercow has a good shout for a gig presenting Just a Minute on R4 once this is all over, should Nicholas Parsons wish to retire of course.

  • I'm not sure he'll have a voice left after all this...

    ORRDUHHHHH!

  • Anna Soubry being shouted down was disgraceful by the way. Lowlight of this evening in the House.

  • I’m not sure it will make any difference -

  • Bill Cash was on BBC News afterwards, citing Oliver Cromwell as an example of how to settle disagreement in Parliament. Presumably because he'd have had a really constructive approach to the Irish Backstop.

  • agreed. it was terrible...even when Anna Soubry pointed out the the public are watching this they still went on.

as an aside, one odd thing to have occurred from all this, personally speaking, is that I now think i might be a Scottish nationalist. the SNP MPs contributing to these debates seem to be notably more sensible, reasonable and frankly human than so many of their colleagues on other parties, and I genuinely feel sorry for the scottish people being shackled to the little englanders who on the one hand seem to think the union exists by Divine right and on the other hand couldn't give a fuck about scotland since there are no votes for them there. if I was scotland i would ditch the union and go alone in europe.

  • +1 for the SNP.

In Wales I was a Plaid Cymru voter. After a few election cycles of voting Labour in Manchester and Bolton, I'll be looking for alternatives this year. SNP are to the left of PC, but both are generally left-of-centre despite being nationalist parties. I guess the theme is looking after those who were screwed over by England. Plus ça change...

  • I love the SNP. It's so easy to vote up here. Do you want Tories and Brexit, or SNP and Remain?

I don't want independence (I am English tbf) but it's pretty easy to choose

  • I have to say that I am relieved not to see JRM in that collage.

  • Be hilarious if Amber Rudd took over as leader and then lost her seat at the next GE.

  • So the second ref. vote was 52% to 48%

  • What an unappetising selection. If that was the menu in a restaurant I'd leave and get a pizza.

  • it was the GoT comment by the poster that made me laugh
