• Just got back from Barcelona where I played with shooting skateboarding on film. Jesus, it's hard. Everyone recommended Portra 400, so that's what I got, but because it was always sunny and the film is so sensitive, I always had to keep the aperture closed almost all the way which ruined the depth of field. And I still need to learn a lot about correct exposure - some of the shots are either too dark, or don't have enough contrast. In hindsight, I think I should've got the Portra 160 and open the aperture a bit more.

  • Not a bad attempt! The hippy jump over the tree is nice. Shooting skating is hard, especially without flash as you'll need your shutter speed at 1/1000 at least.

First things I ever shot on film were skateboarding, and main thing I learned was you need a really strong composition to show the trick well, and that you'll burn through A LOT of film. There's a photo (maybe video) somewhere of Atiba Jefferson sat at the bottom of a handrail in a pile of maybe 50 rolls of film, all of them pulled out and wasted because they weren't a make

  • Those are all bloody great. Shallow depth of field is overrated anyway and what you ended up with honestly looks better.

  • Such a good set, love these! Hippy jump is perfect.

  • You could easily shoot portra 400 at 100. Only two stops overexposed which is well within its latitude. Either way I wouldn't worry, lovely shots!

  • Reading your post before scrolling to the pictures really didn't prepare my for how awesome your shots came out.
Really strong compositions and portra colours are lush.
    Really good work!

  • Deep depth of field with sun, colours and fast exposures looks great. Honestly don't get why you'd prefer shallow depth of field with any of these. First one the canopy has a weird solarised/negative look, in a good way.
