Would your head have even hit the ground if you didn’t have the extra inch or helmet material surrounding it?
TLDR: a crash with or without a helmet is not proof one way or the other
(I always wear one, just playing devil’s advocate)

I crashed once, the day after spending £150 on a new helmet. My pump fell off my bike and somehow jammed in my front wheel. I head butted the ground and sustained two deep gashes above my left eye.
Happily I had left my helmet at home, and it was undamaged, saving me £150!

tl;dr
i crashed once - bike went out from under me sideways on a wet manhole cover. my head slapped the ground - if i hadn't been wearing a helmet it would have hurt.
all the 'evidence' i need to remind me to wear one.
