The Padres are never going to pay him all $300M.
None of the probable contenders wanted Machado,
(either because they have adequate production at 3rd base
or (laughably) short stop much cheaper than $30m/year,
or,
they had worries about his temperament),
so the only option was for Scott Boras, (Machado's agent),
to set a new benchmark with a non-contender.
(The Padres are supposed to have 'the Best Farm System' in MLB,
but you need a lot of luck, good management and freedom from injuries
for a farm system to develop into contention).If Machado gets through the first 5 years, I reckon he will by then be a lumbering 1st baseman, (think late Cardinal Albert Pujols, with less production),
or,
a fulltime DH, (think David Ortiz without the media friendly personality).
Crazy amount of money, apparently 300mil for 10 years with a get out clause after five... I can see why he's done it but no idea why he has... Padres aren't exactly the best team... well, they're pretty damn shit
