It’s not for aero. It’s for multiple hand positions. Think of it more as a gravel bike for mountain bike tyres rather than a mountain bike with road bars.
And the gearing is because Prolly built it to ride a route with 6000ft elevation in 55 miles with 18% inclines

Why? Frame designed for 100mm travel sus forks, MTB gearing, dropper, and 29er wheels and tyres. I'm not saying it's bad, or not ideal, or it shouldn't exist, but I see a MTB with drops.

I’d have taken a mtb too for what it’s worth. But apparently it’s not a mtb, it was designed for drops. 80mm or rigid

It's got options. Some people would rather consolidate them all in one bike.
