104 links will do 53/28 on a dérailleur bike as long as the chainstay length is <388mm

I know this may encourage 'depends on' answers but on a standard ish M/L 54-56 road bike, would a 104 link chain be unusable on any particular set ups? Any it would/should be fine on?
