  • Facebook has run a program to collect intimate user data from paid volunteers for the past three years, according to a new report. TechCrunch reported that the company has been paying people ages 13 to 25 as much as $20 month in exchange for installing an app called Facebook Research on iOS or Android, which monitors their phone and web activity and sends it back to Facebook. The company confirmed the existence of the research program to TechCrunch.

Facebook was previously collecting some of this data through Onavo Protect, a VPN service that it acquired in 2013. The data has proven extremely valuable to Facebook in identifying up-and-coming competitors, then acquiring or cloning them.

The Research app requires that users install a custom root certificate, which gives Facebook the ability to see users’ private messages, emails, web searches, and browsing activity. It also asks users to take screenshots of their Amazon order history and send it back to Facebook.

In case there was any doubt

  • as little as $20 pm.

  • Facebook: We've got a serious PR at the problem and we really need to clean up our image.

Also facebook: Let pay kids $20 to upload their living souls directly into our databanks.

    This is incredible:
None of Facebook’s internal iOS apps/betas (used by thousands of employees) are working right now because Apple just revoked the company’s certificate. They won’t open.

  • Almost makes me want to buy an Apple product.

  • Likewise.

If I could bear to use one, I might consider it.

But then... Apple Maps, Safari, bad calendar... I don't think I could bring myself to.

  • Other mapping / web browsing / calenderising apps are available!

Nice "we aren't the problem guys!" positioning from Tim there. Savage.

  • Me either. But it's the thought that counts ;)

  • That horrible music app that steals your music.

  • When Cyber warfare is discussed, people usually talk in terms of a country's infrastructure being attacked by an enemy country, criminals or terrorists. But this is a tech giant duking it out with two others in public, showing how much damage they can cause. It didn't have a noticeable effect on the rest of us, but that's mostly because it was so short lived. The Google and Facebook teams had their capacity to support some of the infrastructure and services we all use crippled. If one of them decided to do something like this for a longer period, Trump style, the effect could be dramatic and stretch far beyond the giants into our lives. Resolution could be very difficult if it had to play out in courts in many countries, particularly if the ability of everybody involved to communicate was impaired.

  • services we all use

Facebook? Fuck it. Fuck it right into the sea.

Just like the internet, users will work their way around any issues.

  • Less easy with Google

  • Google roll their own OS so I can't see Apple or Facebook having any impact on them there (Apple users >>>).

You can export everything out of Google and quickly import it into, say, fastmail or O365 (puke) or whatever.

  • Google is deeper into Net infrastructure than search and email. DNS, a small chunk of the Cloud market... and most apps have many more dependencies than they used to.

  • Yeah, my point is they're not going to be toppled by Facebook or Apple doing something to them because Google drops their app or something.

  • am aware

is one of your pass. Lets get directly to the purpose. Not one person has paid me to investigate about you. You do not know me and you're probably thinking why you're getting this mail?
    Xxxx
Let me tell you, i actually setup a malware on the 18+ streaming (porno) site and do you know what, you visited this site to experience fun (you know what i mean).
When you were viewing video clips, your internet browser began working as a Remote control Desktop with a keylogger which provided me with access to your display as well as webcam. immediately after that, my software gathered every one of your contacts from your Messenger, social networks, and email . and then i created a video. 1st part shows the video you were viewing (you have a good taste lol), and second part shows the recording of your web cam, yea its u.
    Xxxxx
You have two alternatives. We should understand each of these solutions in aspects:
    Xxxx
1st alternative is to just ignore this e-mail. in this scenario, i will send out your video to each one of your personal contacts and also just think regarding the shame you can get. Not to forget if you are in a romance, how it will eventually affect?
    Xxxx

Latter alternative will be to pay me USD 989. Let us regard it as a donation. in this instance, i will promptly delete your video recording. You will keep on going everyday life like this never occurred and you never will hear back again from me.
    Xxxx
You'll make the payment via Bi‌tco‌in (if you don't know this, search 'how to buy b‌itcoi‌n' in Google search engine).

Should you are looking at going to the police, look, this e mail can not be traced back to me. I have dealt with my steps. i am also not trying to charge you very much, i simply want to be compensated. e-mail if i do not receive the ‌bi‌tco‌in‌, i will definitely send your video recording to all of your contacts including relatives, colleagues, and many others. Nevertheless, if i do get paid, i'll destroy the recording immediately. If you really want proof, reply with Yes then i will send out your video to your 10 contacts. This is a non-negotiable offer and so do not waste my time and yours by replying to this message.
