Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • Yep, it's green shoot frenzy over here too. I love it.

I have also just got a compost bin (a neighbour left it out on the street. I hope I fare batter than they did with it.)

I've put it on the decking which is good because I will actually use it and bad because it won't have the soil goodness working upwards.

I have sat it on top of two heavy duty green garden waste bags to limit damage to the deck and am going to grab some established compost from a neighbour's heap to act as a starter layer. Fingers crossed..

  • Move the bin monthly, or your decking WILL rot as moisture accumulates beneath it.

  • 2075 seeds for £1.75 from Wilko today.
I'm going for low cost riot of colour this year. I'm getting organised.

  • I'm hoping those african marigolds you gave me last year self-seed!

  • I've got them coming up EVERYWHERE! Expect me to offload half of these to you also!

  • I'd suggest siting it on the soil, if you have the room, so the worms and the like can get in and speed up your composting.

  • I don't really have room to put it on soil. I also just won't use it if I have to walk over the grass to get to it, I suspect.

Moving it monthly is not going to happen. How would I even move it when it is full (ish) of compost?

This is a bad idea isn't it? Hmmmmm.

  • One option will be to get a paddling pool or similar to put it in.

  • What about that hot bin thing DJ got? Expensive, but also pretty small. Or you could make your own.

You can then transfer it in bulk every so often.

  • Interesting. @dancing james can you tell me more?

Although I am enjoying the zero expenditure nature of my current implementation.

  • It’s a polystyrene bin with fractional ventilation so bacteria heat and accelerate decomposition. Mine runs at around 60c. You could probably make one with some wood, polystyrene and a plastic membrane.

Last night @spotter was telling me his dad made one for his allotment.

  • Anyone got a garden with a damp patch under trees?
Out conserving last weekend, we improved an area to encourage the (very) locally
    abundant little teasel to spread.
I helped myself to a couple of seed heads, for spreading along a riverside walk,
and have some extra if anyone fancies trying to grow them.

    I keep blaming our dog...

    I demand more info.
Please elaborate / provide useful links!

    Ta!

  • Thank you!

I got things mixed up in my head though, was under the false impression that this is being used indoors. I need something for indoors.

  • Just chiming in on the composting chat... I have a 460mm wide gap between two raised beds, not wide enough for most bins. I'm thinking of building a small rack for some these containers, which happen to be 460 wide, holes in base for drainage, and side for airation. Probably small enough that I can give them a shake now and then, I'll stick some insulation in the frame to conserve heat.

  • Mad scenes today. Met a legend of a bloke in the pub who hauled about 3 ton of compost (rotted horse and cow manure) to my place, for nothing (few pints going his way!), his tratter sank in the mushy field so me and my old man spent three hours shifting it onto the new beds with forks and barrows. Raided Tesco Hatfield last night for cardboard which will help establish the no-dig beds over pasture, by suppressing weeds. The twin row will form the base for my polytunnel and we did another outdoor bed too. #knackered

  • Now that is some epic level gardening!

  • Brixton has changed.

  • I am so envious!

  • ^ this

  • :) I watched too much Escape to the Country!

  • Does anyone know a cheap or free way to get loads of wood chips (other than buying a chipper)?

Also finally got a second blueberry and put them both in pots, brigitta(sp?) and spartan.

Spartan is earlier cropping, so fingers crossed the x pollination works.

Can't wait to get enough time and spare £s to rip up the beds and re-terrace the whole area!
