Agree with the above. A buttery is known as a Rowie in Aberdeen. It is a lard based salty croissant. Actually quite nice
Plenty of good drinking holes in Aberdeen from the hipster craft beer places, to the old mannie pubs.
@hippy
The old railway line is a nice ride out to Ellon but can be rough. There is also very quiet B road which takes you directly there too. Park and Ride bus takes you right to near the brewery too.For food Cafe 52 on The Green is nice independent place.
EDIT: Musa is very good too

They are amazing, but deadly
Yeah but what are they?
EDIT: "lard based salty croissant. "

I've found out we have transport to the brewery so the gods are conspiring against me doing anything more physical than lifting drinks.

Glad that place is still going, cracking food and a lovely spot.
Decent boozers in my humble opinion

Also make sure you take a whistle stop your round the current street art goings on. Proper excellent murals and works.
There’s a place that sells macaroni pies all night fresh as well, Thains?
I’m mostly now reminiscing of my field service lifestyle which mostly involved jet lag and drinking all night resulting in terrible dietary choices. So tasty though.
Man I miss Willowbank Road.

Man I crave macaroni pies, they fuelled our week

Swoon. Was an extra 5 quid taxi there then doubling back home but worth it.

Our old boss used to drive us from Hillhead after work, to Thains, then to our houses all over town, then he’d go back home out to Ellon taking stuff back with him for ‘his wife’s breakfast’.

After a successful maiden credit card touring trip with Madame Jambon last year we're already thinking about the summer. Currently set on getting the Caledonian Sleeper to Glasgow, riding to the west coast then riding from Campbeltown to Inverness along NCR78 (250 miles total) over 7 days, then sleeper train home.
It's slightly more miles than our Welsh adventure last year but with less climbing so feels ideal. Anything to be aware of doing this in the summer other than the midges?

If you want to add an extra little loop, consider going to Fort William via Mull from Oban. It adds about 2 hours vs NCR78, and some climbing. You can get the ferry from Oban to Craignure, then the ferry from Fishnish to Lochaline, and up other side of Loch Linnhe. It's paved single track roads, and it's really beautiful - hardly any other vehicles.
The Garrison West pub in Fort William is the best in town.

Much appreciated for this nugget, will pitch the idea but worst case sounds a great an excuse for a separate trip. Will definitely check out the Garrison West, cheers.

Do you have the GPX for this route ? Looks awesome
-
• #270
If it is ‘rejected’ and a separate trip called for, you can always do a smaller version and get the ferry to Lismore, cycle down it and then ferry across to Port Appin, eat all the seafood there, carry on down the old railway as per your original plan

I have the paper Sustrans maps and a clear pocket on my rando bag, that's my GPS! Sorry dude.
-
• #273
Ah great info, sounds like a nice alternative route and might even have to break the no seafood and cycling rule. Cheers
-
• #274
If you fancy properly breaking a seafood rule, detour to here .
Incredible food, a great road with incredible views to and from it, just don’t carry on to Kinlochleven or loop around the road on the other side of the Loch.
I have always planned to ride to the cafe in summer, eat untill I can’t move and camp within waddling distance on the foreshore.
Also, before you get to Ballachulish, make sure you take the time to go to Cuil Bay, it’s stunning. Kendallen station a good stopping point as well - The Holly Tree.
If you are really sad like me, you will find this book really interesting about the railway line that a lot of the cycle route now runs along
I’ll take myself back to the Railways thread now though.....

Always good to know strategic places to stop for food, drink & sightseeing, thanks for this and the heads up of not looping around afterwards. Getting very excited already about the prospect of summer touring, with these nuggets means there's more chance we'll have a great time again and be allowed future touring holidays ;)
Didn't even know we have a railways thread! Used to work at a certain british train set company and think I've had my lifetime fix of loco-action. Saying that secretly pumped for the Caledonian Sleeper.
