  • Levon Helm. But also just because of the banjo - off stringed instruments would be fun to have around the house. I have a guitalele that I bought around 20 years ago for a tenner that always used to love near the sofa until it’s neck came off. Keep meaning to fix that.

  • Ha, the Morden Arms. Classic...

Zither banjos are the enclosed-back English type. They have a hidden channel running from the headstock to the fifth fret for the high 'peck' string instead of actually having the tuner further up the neck. Invented by Windsor in the 1890s or so. I had one once, but it got stashed in a hot loft and sort of fell apart.

Funnily enough I had a notion recently about getting a 6-string guitjo/banjitar and tuning it Nashville-style with the high half of a 12-string set. Genius! Though I'm sure it's been done.

  • Get one, you'll love it! Lots of fun to be had with them I've always found. I would fancy a bouzouki too if I'm honest!

  • Thanks buddy, and thanks @rickster as I'd have bought that, took the neck off, and been absolutely puzzled by lack of truss rod. I'll keep looking!

  • Hashtag me too, thanks Rick.

@Sparky Nice. Love me some Levon. I was planning a holiday round one of his weekend hootenany type things when he died. What a dude.

Used to bluff-it on mandolin in the old man country pubrock band i was in in the early 00s. Had a cheap and cheerful Fender flat back with a pickup. It sounded fine but was an absolute bastard to play. Such painful. So blisters.

  • Is it weird to want to buy a crap 90s DOD pedal that you have no use for because it was the first one you owned and looking at it makes you happy?

  • nope

  • Nope...

  • What is it?

  • If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad

  • Or to quote another slice of 90’s ladyrock: just because it feels good, doesn’t make it right.

    Pickup arrived. It’s fucking beautiful.

  • Because i’m Into guitars and stuff I sometimes click on videos or read articles about the kind of people who’s audience consists only of guitar players. I’m talking about yer Joe Bonnassas and yer... you know. That lot. The guys who are always in guitar magazines and nowhere else. Tell you what? Let’s make it about just him.

So after a while of seeing him pop up in suggested vids I think, well, he’s into some cool stuff. He has. Massive collection of cool guitars and tweed amps and i’d Like to see them. He likes loads of the same stuff I do. Maybe i’ll Check this vid out.

Ok, so he’a A bit of a dork but that’s kind of sweet and he’s also fairly endearingly snarky... like not nauseatingly humble and not a total dick. Seems like a dude you could chat to. But he’s dressed appallingly and i’m Still sure i’ll Hate his actual music... He’s amusingly self-deprecating and keeps mentioning little specific bits of music that he reveres and I love it too... maybe I should put aside my snobbery? He’s obviously an amazing player right? I find out that one of his best known tunes is his cover of one of my all time favourite guitar tunes... an early ZZ Top tune...Maybe I should check it out?

Holy FUCK this is TERRIBLE! It’s everything was feared it would be. Mushy, gainy guitar widdles, HORRIBLE close mic live recorded generic studio band, naff arrangement, just awful. Awful. Awful. Everything I knew it would be before I started to doubt myself.

    Bleaurgh!

  • Once a year I like to watch this. It's that time again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8chFVi0EN0

  • An ex-mate of mine (long story) made an incredible copy of Syd's Esquire, it got used in a Pink Floyd exhibition that toured around for a bit... It was lovely... He bought another mate's OG white Tolex AC15 for what seems like pennies now but seemed like a lot at the time... He's actually a very mentally unbalanced bloke, Jensen Interceptors (he had three at one point) and Vox amps were his thing... He also turned a piggy back white AC30 into a combo, perfect job, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference... Crazy fella...

Apologies, it's been a long week... I cut my left ring finger gardening last week and I've only been able to play in open tuning (E) for the last ten days... Was playing the same two songs over and over for a client today, drove me a bit nuts...

  • yup, Bonamassa is a rockin' guitarist, and also shit dad music... but this Normans guitar 'best of ' is great
