I used to claim to hate chorus in the 90s without really realising that it was all over some of the guitar sounds I liked the most (Nirvana particularly). For most of my playing life it was sort of a joke that would get trotted out every time we ended up in a rehearsal space that had a Jazz chorus in. It was mandatory for someone to plug in, crank the chorus and play the chords from Purple Rain and a few Police riffs and laugh at how shit and cheesy it was...
We'd never stick it in a song mainly because it's such a signifier of 80s pop production and the that aesthetic that was everything that we hated...
Having said that, i later realised how much i enjoyed dicking about with chorus in private as a guilty pleasure, there's something uniquely fun about it. Given that i'm now an old bastard with no interest in what anyone thinks, i might be tempted to stick a bit of chorus in a tune.
