  • In general, I don't like numbers on a dial at all - the fewer the better. I know how to tell the time by now so they seem largely unnecessary and just clutter things. If they are there, they should be oriented the same. It's one of the reasons I fell out of love with my Nomos before i sold it.

If you look at a recent shot of my watch box, only three have numerals (all divers with numerals on bezel) and all orient consistently.

The messiest watch that i love is the Daytona (still on a few lists for one...). With the exception of the 6 on the hour chronograph function, this follows the rules:

The Speedmaster dial is superior to the Daytona in that regard as it's consistent across the entire dial and bezel... I just like the rest of the Daytona more.

  • Yeah, I'm not a fan of Roman numerals either. But I do really like small Arabic ones on the minute track. I spotted a vintage Day-Date somewhere that had them, and it looked so much better than either the Roman numerals, or just the lume pips (imo)

Re the Daytona, if the 6 followed the same rule as the other's wouldn't it be 9?

  • Re the Daytona, if the 6 followed the same rule as the other's wouldn't it be 9?

Yes - which is why the Speedmaster dial & face is better as it maintains a horizontal numbering across the bezel and face, avoiding the issue altogether.
