Merry Christmas everyone. Biggest ever running year for me, now over 1000km.
Had a few dips but always picked it back up. Both the highlight and lowlight of the year was the Amsterdam marathon. Highlight because it made me finally get the running bug whereas before it just wouldn't stick, lowlight because I went out way too fast and crashed hard.
Now signed up to rotterdam in April and so will put that right in 2019.

Amazing @jb000! I'm now 18km off the arbitrary target I set of 250km at the start of the year. Its my first year running after dipping my toe in last year and thought a target of 5km a week would be reasonable.
Realistically I've hit most of this in the latter half of the year but I'm still loving it. Ran my longest ever (10.7km) yesterday at the end of my highest ever mileage week (23.7km) and was well on track for sub-50 until my knee went. A consequence of a big week after a very small week, I guess.
Looking forward to getting that last 18km out before Jan 1st now!

Thanks.
Good work. Before this year my most was 230km so it's a big jump up and feels good. -

lowlight because I went out way too fast and crashed hard.
Highlight then becaused you learned a valuable pacing lesson :) Well done on topping 1000k!

That looks like a fun day out, what was the final milage/elevation? I got to get around to doing something like this, I grew up in Bath and there's loads of great scenery around. I occasionally get a chance for a bit of a blast up Solsbury Hill or to Brown's Folly when I'm visiting family. Well jell.

And here's something that might interest (or bore) some of you. On saturday's long run my running buddy was struggling toward the end*, but to be fair this was her longest ever run and she picked a route that was all up and down... Anyway at the end she was saying she felt really sleepy/groggy. It only occurred the following morning that his was because she had exhausted her glycogen supply in the leg muscles, and started relying on the liver's store of glycogen which is normally reserved for the brain and spinal cord to handle nervous system functions. Less energy for the brain = feeling sleepy.
Biology in action!
*To her credit she was still running at target pace at the end despite admitting she would have bailed earlier if she's been on her own.

Clouds were low so the scenery will be enjoyed on a future run (maybe 2019 version of this). Atmospheric though!
28.7mile with 3500ft up according to strava.

Nice! I might have to borrow that route, unlikely to get a chance to run it until the summer though. Damned races to prep for taking all the fun out of the sightseeing :)

Should be easier going in Summer... quite a few sliders in the mud yesterday. I was pleased that my quite tired (650+ mile) roclite 295's coped admirably.

Totley Two Turtle Doves race today. Felt knackered and slow. HR was a slightly bonkers 177avg - and it definitely felt like it! 53/158, which I’m happy enough with considering how I’ve been feeling/performing recently.
Start vs finish photos speak for themselves.

Can’t find the charging wire for my forerunner - anywhere in Heathrow Terminal 5 likely to sell a spare tomorrow? Or a shop in Edinburgh that might sell one?
-
• #19792
You’ll find one in Embra Shirley. A few dedicated running shops and the average high streets’ worth of Currys etc.
Bet there’s a couple of tech shops in Heathrow too. Depends on how fussy your Garmin is though I guess.

Can anyone recommend a bag for run commute/ long days out in mountains for a tall person?
Things like Salomon, decathlon, omm end up with all the straps/ belts way too high.I’ve got an ultimate direction race pack so wonder if I should just suck it up and buy a fast pack rucksack from them. Pricey though!

I'm not going to hit this year's arbitrary mileage target. There was an early new arrival on Sunday, which has destroyed all Christmas training and racing plans. We didn't tell anyone what was happening so I had to fit a run in during labour - not running on a Saturday would have given the game away!
I am very pleased to have joined the dad running contingent and looking forward to seeing how it affects marathon training.

I use a deuter walking rucksack - i find the mesh back keeps me a bit cooler. Although it is heavier than your average running backpack.

Shows that you worked hard. Nice!

Maybe try the larger capacity race vests. They fit around the chest, so will hopefully fit a bit better than packs with a waist belt in the wrong place.
Today's long run was awesome. Three of us set off from Overton Hill at 8am, one was only planning on running the first 17km. We had a short rain shower in the morning but otherwise really good weather. Not too cold, tailwind most of the way, amazing views, and arrived down at the road to Streatley where our lift home was waiting at a little after 4pm. A bit over 40 miles in a bit over 8 hours.
10/10 would impromptu low key long run again.
