  • Repairs - Can anyone recommend me a good place in London to get a fancy pair of reading specs repaired?

  • I've been wearing a pair of acrylic glasses from Cubitts for about a year and a half. Last week they somehow snapped completely in half whilst I was wiping them. I sent Cubitts an email saying that I thought this was a bit crap for a pair of fairly expensive glasses. They immediately offered to replace the frames, free of charge, despite the fact that they were outside of the warranty period. When they received the broken glasses they noticed the lenses were scratched (undoubtedly due to me dropping them) so replaced them as well.
Really, really impressed by their customer service, would highly reccomend!

  • Nice one! I was expecting a question on how to fix acrylic frames but nice to hear they sorted it out. Had a similar thing a while ago when mine snapped in two. My optician tried to repair them but it didn’t work out well enough so had to get a new pair

Mine broke during wiping too, but due to a crack that appeared earlier when I dropped them, sounds like a similar thing happened to you

  • Mine snapped right down the middle, not sure if you can repair that! There weren't any obvious cracks or anything but they'd definitely been dropped more than once.
Managed to do it an hour into an 8 hour courier shift, really not ideal!

  • Damn, I have a pair of cubitts.. with sunglass prescription lenses so don’t wear them all the time, but these snaps are a concern.. they are reasonably priced though and have a good range of styles for men and women

  • That is good service! I've never snapped a pair of acrylic specs - mine have always gone at a hinge - but I guess they do sometimes go there; think of the 'NHS specs taped at the bridge' nerd stereotype.

  • I used to go to Eye Contacts in Camden, old school friend owns the shop.. but in the last year I’ve been going to Specstacular just off Brick Lane.. worked on all of these..

Reading specs.. 30 year old Giorgio Armani frames in mint condition.. yep I kept the frames since 1988

Sunglasses- Mikita were my last pair of normal glasses, had frames cleaned up and green tinted Nikon lenses with new prescription

My everyday glasses - Vinylize best investment ever with blue Nikon lenses, I hope the frames last forever

  • That's what happened to mine. They glued them together with acetone but didn't get them 100% straight so didn't sit right after the repair. They're still intact though so I've kept them as backup. I'm pretty much blind without them so being without for even a few hours is hopeless.

  • love them vinylize ones

  • Thanks, Proper old skool style
I get a lot of compliments

  • Anyone bought direct from Moscot?

  • Bought some Moscot Lemtosh and later some Kliptosh from their Beak St store. Great staff and specs.

  • Really love my old Timberland glasses but they have a broken solder joint and very tired lenses. The arms are ace cos they are so thin but strong with it.
I am struggling to find a replacement pair - everything seems to have deep arms. Oh, I am also a congenital tight-wad due to Yorkshire/Scots parentage.
Ideas please for strong, thin arm, semi-frameless specs. Ta.

  • I went through a phase of wearing Philippe Starck glasses that were very similar to that... But not cheap as I recall...

  • $500 for Chinese-made frames? Have you looked at Shuron? Other than still being a manufacturer as opposed to a marketing facility, their range of sizes in arms, lenses and bridge widths is astounding.

  • Found out I have a minor amount of UV damage in my eye and want to reduce risk of getting any more. Looking for a pair of decent cycling glasses with 100% UV protection, good coverage and subtle in style. Any recommendations?

  • good coverage and subtle in style

Might be tough to combine those two.

  • Recently picked up some vintage AO Stadium frames that are fairly close to this, though had to do a fair bit of dremel and hot water work to make 'em fit my broad schnoz. Perfect now, I'll probably get a G15 lens put in (for driving, need prescription for distance).

  • Speccy! My first pair of bins at age 42. I dig.

  • One hinge keep getting loose after each time I tighten the screw.
I locktite a solution here? I guess it would be, but I might be missing a trick.

  • I've got the same thing. Been to the opticians a number of times to get it tightened (can't see enough without my glasses to do it myself...). Been meaning to get their opinion on it but can't see a tiny bit do any harm. Unless it reacts with the acetate?

  • edit: double post

  • Yeah, the hinge itself is all metal (ray ban wayfarer) so a bit of thread lock shouldn't get too much on the acetate.

Also: can the gray milky discolouration be polished off the acetate with autosol?
