After leaving Warsaw at 18:30 I finally crossed checkpoint Charlie at 04:17 and managed to grab a room in a hostel at 05:00.
The journey was quite eventful, I got passed by everything from artic lorries to mopeds... first the car decided it didn’t want the rocker cover to stay on and after 100ish KM it’d lifted up and sprayed oil everywhere, tightened that down again and it lifted a few more times.
It then decided to delete its exhaust manifold bolts, one hit the top of the belt or one of the pulleys and shot against the engine cover and out at the rear glass giving it a decent chip!
I had to continue to the journey with a massive exhaust leak. The muffler then decided to come disconnected and one of the studs retaining it popped out and turned into a new crankcase breather spraying oil everywhere so I had to keep stopping to top that up all the way to Berlin.
I think I used about 2L oil per 100km and 5L fuel. Sorry if all this is eve harder to follow the usual, I’m tired and my brain is all shaken about... and I can’t hear anything....

Incredible journey to read about. Hope it's still enjoyable and it arrives back largely (>80%) intact.

At least the engine strip down has been started for you, enjoying the updates

I was going through a similar loop when I was looking for my next car a couple of years ago. Heart said 6 cylinder 5 series touring, maybe 4 - 6 years old.
Ended up buying a new Skoda Superb 220 (4 cylinder VAG TSi lump).
PCP over 4 years, full warranty for 4 years. It's comfortable and nice to drive. Obviously it isn't performance car quick but you put your foot down and it shifts. The turbo is nicely progressive. You can fit a tonne of stuff in it. It has creature comforts. It's fine to drive long distances in. It's hassle free.
For me, it's the best balance between practical, affordable, desirable (ish!) and low hassle (my decision making was heavily skewed towards low hassle).

I don't mind the looks of the Superb estate at all, and they do a 280 version I think too. The wheels are fucking terrible though.
Someone else on here owns one too, right? The person with a few cars, throttle bodied mx5 and classic Merc?
-
• #45512
Not sure who else has one but if you want to have a spin in mine, let me know. I'm East.
The 280 wasn't availabe when I bought mine, they were only doing vRS Octavias.

Yeah that'd be great actually, I'll give you a shout soon.

Haha

Ok, no problem.
Looking at the Skoda website, they seem to have got rid of the 220 but there is now a 272PS 4WD.

I love driving, totally used to the feel of the throttle now... This will definitely turn into a love affair...
But I need black license plates, will resolve this shortly... The black ones have palm trees on them...

The Cinelli's too big for me anyway, I'm sellin' it!!!
Good shot of some of the hail damage, QLD doesn't fuck about...
This is the cheeseball plate I wanted but need to get a new five digit registration if I do that, fuck that...

If you want to make it look a million times better with about 2 hours work, wet sand the headlights and then polish them.
-
• #45520
You'll need a rotary polisher, you'll struggle by hand.

For about 200AUD you could get a 2nd hand bonnet, and then get some vinyl to cover the roof. If you get some of that textured vinyl, as terrible as it may be on a standard car, it would probably be thick enough to hide the roof dents.
-

It's going in for a deep valeting ASAP, I thought about getting a new bonnet and then get the other dents pulled but it will cost A LOT... And I don't really care, would rather put the money towards the next whip!
-
• #45523
No point getting the dents fixed, the next hail storm will put em back in. The car will go faster any way, their speed dimples. Like a golf ball. Polished headlight lenses will be worthwhile tho.
Driving is pretty great, so much speed with so little effort. Fast way to get fat though. Enjoy the roads!
