Generic Touring Thread

Would be interested in what you think you should get/if there's other bike tours offering similar. As far as I know they don't tend to include travel to the destination but do tend to include all food. I guess it's also at least one guide's time for two weeks which ain't cheap.

Like I say if I had the cash I would probably go on some of these pannier tours, I just feel bad because I know I could do it all my self and save a wodge.

You say that. I just get stressed, depressed, anxious, overwhelmed and then give up on the concept most of the time.

If anyone wants to pay me a grand i'll organise and lead a tour for them pretty much anywhere

My DIY touring food (cafes and restaurants) + accommodation (b&b or hostel) budget is about £75 a day so its not too bad if the food + accommodation is good and someone else fixes your punctures I suppose.

for an extra grand I'll even do grainy B&W photos

I'm sure the pannier tour will involve more camping and cooking than resturants and hotels.

My first bike tour started from my home and lasted 8 days including 3 day rest in Dresden. Europe is a good place to start and Eurovelo routes are there to help you plan your trip. Just a suggestion. :)

Refrain your stress, depression and anxiety and give camping and cooking a go, start small and grow your ambitions one step at a time then.

Go to the Peak District, the South Downs, Lake District. Then venture to Europe, start from western Europe, maybe Germany, France and Belgium. Do little things first, before dreaming going to Mongolia. It's far and exotic but it doesn't mean you can't have an adventure unless you go that far.

I'd say at most you may get a yurt in Mongolia, probably not at that price point, definitely not hotels and restaurants every night. You may get a cook though, that does the cooking for the whole group. I'd do it for a couple of grands!

I cycled down France years ago. Rained msr days and was never above 5deg. It sucked, a bit.

I use a tag along trailer, in combination with a kid and front panniers. It means I carry almost everything. It’s pretty heavy, but riding is very predictable and I can even handle it on smaller trails without a problem.
I’m very happy with it.

That's what I'm thinking. Though maybe just 2 rear panniers would suffice.

Does it attach to the quick release, as I've thru axle! Doh

Longer axle (from a fat bike?) and a hack like the @Hulsroy thru axle front rack?

I did 4 days from Oxford to Land's End a few years back. We lucked out, was the most gloriously crisp, blue-sky'd, bright sun, frosty vision of wonderfulness. 10/10 would do again. But probably only under these conditions...
