I think you’d be opening a can of worms if you started renaming everything that’s a bit racist in Bristol. Probably easier to just finish bombing the place and start again.

The empire was driven by greed and commercial interest at the expense of locals if necessary.
Often they would nice up a few locals to maintain power.. and would mostly maintain local customs, this would keep them in control... This system was very successful. But They did promote missionaries tbh.
The political system was in English
And names where adjusted to suit.
The reality is that many people benefited from the British at the expense of the masses and that is what maintained power.
Names where relatively minor issue..considering famines and massacres. -

As someone who grew up in the ruins of the empire, the names mean a lot to me.

I appreciate that.. but reality is there are far greater crimes of colonialism then names... millions died in various ways (famine massacres...etc) Wealth extracted and whole countries de-educated. Cultures, religions, languages and whole ways of life ablitorated. Not to mention slavery.
These new name changes are a minor issues considering the situation the countries are in... no sanitation no food no education no health care..
But a name change is pretty easy to do and allows a politician to build a name for himself for not a lot of work.
Most people fall for it. -

I work with two Indian guys who refer to Mumbai as Bombay. That is all.

What are we supposed to call the film industry there, if we call Bombay ‘Mumbai’ though?
Kerala already has ‘Mollywood’.Won’t somebody think of the portmanteaus?!
