And generates less for the economy, overall, than teaching English as a foreign language (if one considers that an industry). Something like 0.9 Bn plays 1.2 Bn.

After Brexit catching fish will be far more important than teaching English to foreigns.

Yes. But.
The inshore fleet are very brexity and feel (rightly) hard done by by the big Scottish /European fleets that grab the majority of quota. -
• #15355
Isn't the allocation of the quota entirely within UK control? Seems a bit silly to be blaming the EU if so.
-
• #15356
I'm not saying it's equitable, I'm saying that an industry that, as a whole, brings less to the UK economy than Porn, is viewed as being of critical national importance far in excess of its actual contribution.
There is no good Brexit for fishing, it's all lies and unicorns, but to pursue their fantasy they are going to banjo the economy.

Yep, laws that we have always had control over have led to the malcontent of traditional fishing communities. We could change it in their favour now, but that would be going against big business who I imagine help to line the pockets of those that make these decisions.
But, why let facts get in the way of bashing the EU.
This is a good article. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jun/11/brexit-uk-fishermen-fishing-industry-quotas-uk-government

I'm not sure I get the link with inequality
There's a strong theory that one of the big drivers for the Brexit vote wasn't really wanting to leave the EU specifically but, for a lot of working class people, the feeling that they were being left behind. Inequality has increased, many people are living in poverty, austerity, politicians are becoming more remote, etc.
The Brexit vote was their chance to say fuck you, you can't ignore us now. Unfortunately very little has actually changed to address this.

When the legal advice was published yesterday Lord Keen of Elie claimed for the government that "The release of this advice does not set a precedent for any future release of Law Officers' advice." That's clearly not the case IMO but IANAConstitutionalL.
The Government was found in comtempt because they'd agreed, in an unopposed motion in Parliament, to release the full legal advice after the Withdrawal Agreement had been reached and before the MPs get to vote on the WA.
See the letter to the speaker from Starmer et al:-

It's not about releasing all Law Officers' advice, just the bits they said they would.

All I know is that for an island surrounded by sea the fish here is generally rubbish.
Shout out to the Maldon Smokehouse though 👍

The cooks at the Axe are Italians.
-
• #15362
Thanks, strangely I didn't see anything mentioning it was unopposed originally.
There have still been a lot of MPs making a fuss about it being released though, including Tory MPs basically telling Starmer "You'll regret this if you ever get to be Attorney General".
-
• #15363
That's why the food is good then ;)
It's not the cooks fault though, Britain doesn't seem to have the infrastructure in place to get fresh fish around the country without it costing a fortune. But I suspect this comes back to British people not really liking fish - in Japan there is plentiful incredibly fresh fish even deep inland at reasonable prices, but they have the economies of scale (lots of people eat fish) to make it work I guess.

Fishing contributes less than editing Youtube videos was a stat I've probably misremembered from somewhere.

Scottish /European fleets that grab the majority of quota.
I don't really care much about fishing to be honest, but my understanding is that the UK fishing quota was by vessel (back in the day), which the UK fisherman sold to big European fisheries. So, they took their fishing rights and have already profited from them.

It's a little more complicated than that.
https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/press-releases/uncovered-rich-list-codfathers-dominating-uks-fishing-industry/is a good place.
The big offshore quotas are managed and traded nationally, for example herring - we swap fuckloads of this with the dutch.
The inshore quotas (<10m boats within 10 miles i think) are the ones that cause consternation.Fishing is shit. It's terrible whether you live the dream of europhile fish on tap or whether you're in brexit britain. Scallop farming/dredging, overfishing, non selectivity, over fishing, quotas, hard work, no love from the middle classes for the work you're doing unless you're landing fish to rick stein or something.
The reason why the inshore fleet want brexit is because 1970s and they want to fish off their island catching their fish. The offshore mob want to be able to fish where they want as well. Unfortunately, it's less likely to be a boat and crew and more likely to be employees of a fishing corporation.
The quotas of fish are under our control, but we trade them. There's an allocation to the EU which is then allocated between countries. If that makes sense?

Meanwhile...
https://www.freemovement.org.uk/eu-settlement-scheme-no-deal/
If there is no deal, settled status takes away even more on family reunification and there's no right of appeal anymore then.
Already can't vote anymore, the Surinder Singh rights for people to bring partners abroad are gone already, settled status lapses after 5 years and then you fall under UK immigration law.
So far for "everything stays the same"

It's like 0.4% of GDP or something. When did fishing become hot shit? It's the only industry the whole fucking Brexshitters have talked about.
May saying she’s consulted fishermen on her deal, an industry that employs a grand total of ten thousand people in the U.K.
